Marcel André Le Picard, né le 17 janvier 1887 au Havre (Seine-Maritime), mort le 25 mai 1952 à Los Angeles (Californie), est un directeur de la photographie français, ayant fait carrière aux États-Unis.

Membre de l'ASC, il est le plus souvent crédité Marcel Le Picard.

Biography

Installé aux États-Unis, Marcel Le Picard y débute comme chef opérateur sur The Outlaw's Revenge, drame de Christy Cabanne sorti en 1915, avec Raoul Walsh et Mae Marsh. Jusqu'en 1928, il contribue à près de cinquante films muets américains (dont onze avec Will Rogers, de 1919 à 1921).

Puis il collabore à cent-cinquante films parlants — le premier sorti en 1930 —, la plupart étant des réalisations de série B, produites notamment (à partir de 1937) par Monogram Pictures. En particulier, il travaille sur de nombreux westerns, mettant en vedette Tim McCoy (cinq films, en 1938-1939), Tex Ritter (seize films, de 1939 à 1941), Tom Keene (quatre films, en 1941-1942), Ken Maynard (quatre films, en 1943-1944), ou encore Bob Steele (quatre films, en 1944-1945), entre autres.

Mentionnons également vingt-cinq films avec Leo Gorcey (de 1941 à 1952), ainsi que cinq avec Béla Lugosi (de 1941 à 1947), dont les films d'horreur Le Fantôme invisible de Joseph H. Lewis en 1941, Voodoo Man de William Beaudine en 1944 et Scared to Death de Christy Cabanne en 1947.

After Slip is drafted into the Marines, the rest of the gang volunteers so they can be with him. Sach discovers that the colonel knew his father and he is promoted. During a drill that he is putting the rest of the gang through, they find a soldier left for dead on the side of the road. Slip discovers a playing card next to the marine and traces it to Jolly Joe Johnson's gambling house. They suspect that the gambling house is cheating and set out to uncover the proof. They enter the gambling house late at night, but are discovered by Jolly Joe and his gang. A fight ensues, but two Marine intelligence officers arrive in time to arrest the criminals. Sach, having been framed for having a girl in the barracks is stripped of his promotions, but a new colonel is now in charge and fought with a soldier named Mahoney. Slip claims that was his father and he is promoted and promptly gets even with Sach by taking him on a long drill.

The members of the local university's trust make a wager that anyone can make it through college if just given the chance. Because of this, they enlist the boys to attend the university to prove the theory. While the boys do not become academic scholars, Sach invents a "vitamin" drink that makes him invincible. They all join the football team and Sach becomes the star player, leading them to the big championship game. A local gambler sees an opportunity to make some money by kidnapping Sach and preventing him from playing. However, Slip and the rest of the gang rescue Sach and return him to the game. Unfortunately he does not have any more "vitamins", so Slip plans a ruse on the playing field that distracts the other team and allows him to score the winning touchdown.

The military is performing a practice air raid on New York City. Sach convinces the boys that it is real and they go down to the recruiter's office and enlist. Meanwhile, Slip arrives at Louie's and finds out what just happened and goes down there to stop them. He is too late, as they have already joined, and is tricked into enlisting himself.

Louie is owed money by a stable-owner and sends Slip and the boys over to collect the debt. They return with a horse, My Girl, as payment. Local gangsters want the horse and switch their horse, Tarzana, for the gang's horse. They boys discover the ruse and the horses are switched several more times. In the end, Sach rides the real My Girl in a horse race, beating Tarzana and the gangsters.

After Slip discovers a spiritualist in the neighborhood, he enlists the boys to investigate. They discover that she is a fake and working for Margo the Medium, a radio star who has convinced Sach and Whitey that ghosts exist. They go to her place using Louie as a decoy. While she is busy trying to connect to Louie's dead uncle, the rest of the boys investigate the house. A real ghost, Edgar, befriends Sach and helps him investigate as well. Although the others cannot see Edgar, he does help them in times of crisis and helps them uncover Margo's scam.

The boys are on their way home from a masquerade party when they hear noises in a warehouse and decide to investigate. They find the warehouse is being robbed and they are mistakenly captured by the police and sentenced for robbing it. Gabe, as their lawyer, gets them off with just probation but Slip insists that he and Sach accept jail time in order to find out who is behind the series of robberies in the neighborhood. He deduces that the instructions are being sent from inside the prison via a short wave radio.

Slip suggests that Louie take a vacation and hand over the responsibilities of the sweet shop to the boys. Louie reluctantly agrees and takes his wife to Coney Island. The boys decide to turn his sweet shop into an escort service and give the place a makeover. Meanwhile Gabe, who works as a messenger for a bank, has gotten himself into trouble. He had $5,000 of the bank's money stolen from him and local gangsters threaten to frame him for the theft unless he agrees to get the bank vault combination for them. He gives them the combination and the gangsters take over the sweet shop from Sach, who is minding it while Slip and the rest of the boys are out serving as escorts. Their goal is to dig from the sweet shop to the bank, and Sach allows them to after they convince him that they are government men looking for uranium. Eventually Slip, Louie, and the rest of the boys wind up back at the sweet shop and are pressed into service. Gabe goes to the police to tell the whole story, and as soon as he does, the gangsters dig through the police station floor (which is situated behind the bank) and are captured. Louie is temporarily pleased as Sach did find uranium under his store, but in the end it is discovered that he only owns the land.

Sach Jones (Huntz Hall) and Slip Mahoney (Leo Gorcey) are copy boys for the New York Daily Chronicle newspaper and they hear their friend Gabe, a local police officer, has been shot in the line of duty, while trying to stop a robbery. Both boys are members of the Bowery Boys gang, and they decide to find the person who killed their friend. They soon find a lead, since another police man has been shot by the same killer, who turns out to be a mob gangster and member of the Loop Gang from Chicago. The boys then decide to go undercover to try to infiltrate the mob and expose them. They get a green light from their editor, Joe Cobb, to go and investigate the story further. They encounter two members of the Loop Gang and befriend them, with the result that they get to meet their boss, Angles Carson (Mickey Knox). Angles likes the boys and soon they are involved with the gang's next hit - a new robbery. Before long, they get to meet Angles' boss, Carver (Edward Ryan), who takes a liking to them because he thinks they are tough gangsters that he can use in his operation. He lets the boys in on a plan to rob the Gotham Steel Works the next day, and Slip sends this information to the police. An ambush is set, to stop the robbery and catch the gangsters, but someone on the inside slips the information about the ambush to Carver. Carver changes his plans and instead tries to rob the Beacon Machine Works. Slip has no possibility to warn the police, but when Carver is trying to crack open the safe at Beacon Machine Works the next evening, Slip gets a chance to call his editor, who passes the information forward. Unfortunately, another employee at the Chronicle, a cartoonist named Lowell, informs Carver that the police is coming. There is a showdown between Slip and Sach and the Loop Gang members, and Slip and Sach are beat up badly. They are taken to the hospital, and once there, Sach calls for a nurse to take care of him, but when a male nurse arrives he sends him to over to Slip and gets up to leave.
