Margaret Dumont (October 20, 1882 – March 6, 1965) was an American stage and film actress. She is remembered mostly for being the comic foil to Groucho Marx in seven of the Marx Brothers films. Groucho called her "practically the fifth Marx brother."

Biography

Née Daisy Juliette Baker à Brooklyn, New York, elle adopte le nom de scène de Marguerit ou Margaret Dumond. Elle joue dans sept des films des Marx Brothers, le rôle de la riche veuve alternativement courtisée ou insultée par le personnage de Groucho Marx. Elle a parfois été considérée comme la cinquième Marx Brothers.

Elle joue en tout dans 57 films, y compris certains films muets, à commencer par A tale of Two cities, en 1917. Son premier rôle majeur lui est proposé dans Noix de coco, en 1929. Son dernier film est What a Way to go!, en 1964, dans lequel elle joue Mrs. Foster.

A naive country boy named Benny Miller (Lou Costello), from Cucamonga, California, has been taking correspondence phonograph lessons in salesmanship. Upon completion of the course, he leaves his mother (Mary Gordon) and his girlfriend Martha (Elena Verdugo) to pursue a career in Los Angeles. He arranges a meeting with his Uncle Clarence (George Cleveland), a bookkeeper with the Hercules Vacuum Cleaner Company. When he arrives to ask for a job, the sales manager, John Morrison (Bud Abbott), mistakes him for one of the auditioning fashion models and has him remove his clothing. Morrison's secret wife, Hazel Temple (Jacqueline deWit), discovers the mistake and suggests that Benny be hired to avoid an accounting scandal, as they have been "cooking the books". Unfortunately, Benny is fired from his salesman post after only one day. Clarence transfers Benny to the company's Stockton branch, which is run by Morrison's cousin, Tom Chandler (also played by Bud Abbott).

Joe Davis Sr. performs in a big nightclub called Billy Rose's Diamond Horseshoe. He is visited by his son Joe Jr. who is a medical student. Joe Jr. tells his father that he wants to be in show business, much to his father's disapproval. Nevertheless, Joe Sr. gives his son a job at his club where Joe Jr. then becomes smitten with Bonnie Collins; the club's headlining act. Joe Sr. is spending too much time worrying about his son that he starts to neglect his own girlfriend Claire. Claire promises to give Bonnie a mink coat if she pretends to like and go out with Joe Jr., so that Joe Sr. will pay more attention to her. Things take a complicated turn when Bonnie actually does fall in love with Joe Jr. and they get married, again much to his father's disapproval.
