James Michael Reaves (born September 14, 1950) is an American writer, known for his contributions as scriptwriter and story editor to a number of 1980s and 1990s animated television series, including Disney's Gargoyles and Batman: The Animated Series. He has also written media tie-in novels, children's books, and original fiction. He often collaborates with Steve Perry and won a 1993 Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing in an Animated Program in his work on Batman: The Animated Series. He suffers from Parkinson's Disease, and currently maintains a blog concerning his experiences dealing with the disease and its effects.

A new heroine has arrived in Gotham whose identity is a mystery— even to Batman. During patrol, the Dynamic Duo spots her trying to stop one of Penguin's shipments on Gotham's interstate, using a plasma rifle to send the Penguin's truck with its driver off the bridge. Batman and Robin save the driver from falling to his death. Batman must figure out who Batwoman is and stop familiar enemies, the Penguin and Rupert Thorne, from selling illegal weapons to the fictional nation of Kasnia. The two employ Carlton Duquesne, a gangster, to provide protection.

In 994, Castle Wyvern of Scotland is attacked by Vikings, led by the ruthless Hakon. The resident warriors struggle to repel the attack until the sun set, and at night, the seemingly lifeless stone gargoyle statues awaken, revealing themselves to be real living gargoyles. Goliath and his powerful gargoyle clan subsequently defend the castle and successfully forced the Vikings to retreat. The human captain of the guard sees them as heroes, but their heroism appears to do nothing to earn appreciation from Princess Katherine, the court wizard Magus, or the other human residents, most of whom still see their gargoyle protectors as monsters and treat them with prejudice. Goliath's lover and the Captain argued that the gargoyles deserve more praise and dignity, especially since their castle was built on top of the land that originally belonged to the gargoyles, but Goliath adamantly insists that they must endure being misunderstood and protect the castle and all of its residents. The Captain urged Goliath to take his clan away from the castle the following night, but Goliath remains determined to protect the castle.

During a conference of crime bosses held in a Gotham City skyscraper, gangster Chuckie Sol is killed by a mysterious cloaked figure, shortly after Batman bursts in on the meeting. Due to the killer's resemblance to Batman, the Dark Knight is blamed for Sol's death. Councilman Arthur Reeves tells the media that Batman is a public menace (despite Commissioner Gordon's protests), then later attends a party at the mansion of billionaire Bruce Wayne, Batman's secret identity. Reeves teases Bruce about his bad luck with women and for having allowed an old girlfriend, Andrea Beaumont, to get away.

Max Dire is a Los Angeles detective who is feeling the strain that his profession entails when his wife of two years, Liza, accuses him of bringing his work home and leaves him to ponder her future, while his partner, Jim Sheldon, commits suicide by shooting himself in the head.
