Since his early adolescence, Zachary "Zack" Mayo (Richard Gere) has been living in the Philippines with his alcoholic and promiscuous father, U.S. Navy chief boatswain's mate Byron Mayo (Robert Loggia), following the suicide of his mother (who is never named in the story).
