Se déroulant entre le 9 mai 1940 (la veille de l’offensive allemande) et début juin 1940, le film se focalise sur le personnage de Churchill et son entourage, en partie par l'œil de sa nouvelle secrétaire privée , chargée de taper télégrammes et courriers. D'abord pressenti comme prochain Premier ministre, Churchill se heurte à une opposition favorable à des pourparlers de paix (en premier Lord Halifax et Chamberlain). Puis on le suit à la tête du gouvernement, dans les affres de la douleur des choix difficiles. Notamment lorsque la guerre éclair refoule les 300 000 hommes de l'armée britannique à Dunkerque, le dos à la mer. Churchill ordonne le sacrifice d'une unité chargée d'une diversion (30e brigade motorisée commandée par le brigadier Nicholson à Calais) et la mobilisation des embarcations civiles pour secourir les armées française et anglaise encerclées à Dunkerque : c'est l'« opération Dynamo » qui débute le 26 mai.

In early 1920s Copenhagen, the illustrator and artist Gerda Wegener (Alicia Vikander) asks her husband, Einar Wegener (Eddie Redmayne), to stand in for a female model. The popularity of the portraits leads to Gerda painting her husband in further pictures as a woman. Einar develops an attraction for a female physical appearance and begins living as a woman named Lili Elbe. Ultimately Elbe becomes the first ever recipient of male to female sex reassignment surgery, and Gerda supports her decision, although their marriage becomes strained when Gerda comes to the realization that Lili is no longer the person she married. A childhood friend of Lili, Hans Axgil (Matthias Schoenaerts), shows up and forms a complex love triangle with the couple.

In a pre-credit sequence Effie Gray is seen walking through a garden speaking about a fairy story in which a girl married a man with wicked parents. After the credits, the marriage of Effie to John Ruskin in Perth, Scotland is seen. The couple travel to London to stay with his parents. Effie soon begins to feel isolated, especially as she is repeatedly belittled by John's mother. Paris in the 1880s. Georges Duroy (Robert Pattinson) is a penniless soldier who has spent the last six months in Paris, barely making a living as an office clerk. British art curator Harry Deane (Colin Firth) decides to seek revenge on his abusive boss Lord Shabandar (Alan Rickman) by conning him into buying a fake Monet ("Haystacks at Dusk"), a painting that has been missing since 1945, after being plundered by the Nazis. He teams up with a master art forger, the Major, and travels to Alpine, Texas to find rodeo queen, PJ Puznowski (Cameron Diaz) whom he plans to recruit in his scheme. Harry envisions the plan in his head, and goes to a bar to talk to PJ. PJ's friend Merle, angered by his advances, punches Harry in the face and a bar fight is started. PJ walks outside to find Harry and the Major cleaning their wounds, and they talk to her about the deal. She agrees and the next day the three drive out to PJ's grandmother's mobile home out in the desert. They hang the fake Monet on the wall and take a picture with the painting in the background. The picture is to appear with an article on the rodeo queen that will be published in a magazine that is part of Shabandar's media empire.
