Her father owns an Advertising agency in Mumbai and her elder sister, Amrita Rao, is an award winning Bollywood actress. Preetika graduated majoring in History from Sophia College, while also acquiring a diploma in Advertising and Journalism.
As a Teen-model, Rao started her modelling career with an advertisement for Cadbury Dairy Milk. along with Amitabh Bachchan, directed by Shoojit Sarkar, She moved on to have a successful modelling career with forty plus tvc and print campaigns to her credit.
In order to pursue her academic degree Rao chose to let-go off some big offers from Bollywood that came her way including offer’s for movies like Jane Tu Jane Naa and Ashiqui2.
Preetika made her acting debut with the Tamil romantic film Chikku Bukku (2011) with Media One Global Ent Pvt Ltd the makers of Tamil movie Jeans and Rajnikanth’s Kocchadayyan . However Preetika quit South movies for a diploma course in broadcast journalism from the New York Film Academy.
In 2014, Preetika made the transition from Regional cinema to National Television with the popular TV Show Beintehaa for COLORS -Viacom18 playing the role of Aaliya Zain Abdullah which made her a house-hold name.
Preetika Rao won the Best Actress Actress Award at the 23rd Annual Kalakar Awards at Kolkatta in January 2015. Along with the Zee Gold Best Debut & The ITA 2014.

Arjun (Arya), a London-based disc jockey, leads a happy life. Also there is Anu (Shriya Saran), who completes her MBA in a London university. One day, Arjun is forced to come to his native village in Karaikudi to ensure that his ancestral property is not sold. Also Anu too is forced to come to Madurai to meet her father who is injured in an accident. The two strangers meet in a train. There begins their journey towards their respective destinations. Meanwhile, a diary of Arjun's father pops out from his bag. He browses through it to understand his dad's love life. In flashback, the movie goes back to 1985. It is revealed that Sekar (Arya) returns to his village after getting selected as a Police.
