Raymond van het Groenewoud (Schaarbeek, 14 February 1950) is one of the most popular Belgian music artists. He is of Dutch and Jewish descent and sings in Dutch. His career started in 1973 and he has since scored many hits in Flanders and the Netherlands, in many different styles. His biggest hits include Vlaanderen Boven, Meisjes, Je veux de l'amour and Liefde voor muziek. He refers to himself as a musician but also a poet, philosopher and clown.

Seventeen-year-old Marva Vereecken is a regular at singing contests which she never wins. When her father, Jean, gets laid off, he decides to kidnap the number one singer in the country, Debbie. The kidnapping greatly increases sales of Debbie's latest single, much to the pleasant surprise of Michael, Debbie's manager. Michael in turn proposes a secret deal to make Marva a star if Jean agrees to keep Debbie out of the way for as long as Michael wants.

Brussels 1983. Max, an assassin, is seriously depressed. He tries to commit suicide by sticking a gun in his mouth, but when the gun jams he cries nevertheless. We follow him as he travels through Brussels without any goal and provocates everyone he meets. His mood changes at the most unpredictable moments. Max meets two people, Alice, a bar keeper, and Abdel, her customer of Moroccan descent, who both fancy her as their mistress. The climax of the story takes place on the Ronquières inclined plane.
