Roy Frank "RJ" Mitte III (born August 21, 1992) is an American actor, producer and model. He is best known for his role as Walter "Flynn" White Jr. on the AMC series Breaking Bad (2008–13). Like his character on the show, he has mild cerebral palsy. After moving to Hollywood in 2006, he began training with personal talent manager Addison Witt. They sought out acting opportunities where his disability would serve to educate viewers, which led him to audition for the role in Breaking Bad.
Biography
Mitte was born in August 1992 in Lafayette, Louisiana, and moved with his family in 2006 to Los Angeles, where his younger sister Lacianne Carriere had received an offer for a role in a film project. After receiving several roles as extras, including in the Disney series Hannah Montana, Mitte became interested in movies and decided to take acting lessons.
Shortly after, he was offered the role of Walter White, Jr., who also has cerebral palsy, in the AMC series Breaking Bad. Although he had to learn to use crutches and slur his speech for the role, in real life, he continues physical and occupational therapy daily to overcome the cerebral palsy he was born with. Mitte spends thirteen hours a day on the set which leaves no time to attend regular high school, however the production companies Sony and AMC provide a tutor to help get him with his high school education.
The Screen Actors Guild recently named Mitte as the spokesperson for actors with disabilities. He is the representative of "Inclusion in the Arts and Media of Performers With Disabilities (I AM PWD)," which employs artists with disabilities.
Besides working on Breaking Bad, Mitte has a few other projects in the works. In November, he will be in Canada for the filming of a movie called Wildflowers, starring Frances Fisher. Mitte’s sister, 6-year-old Lacianne Carriere, will also be in the film. Mitte is one of the producers on the project. He is also working as a producer on a documentary called The Kids of Whitney High. Mitte hopes to branch out into directing eventually.
In 2011, he played a leading role in the horror short film "Stump." That same year, he acted as executive producer of the documentary Vanished: The Tara Calico Story, that deals with the disappearance of American Tara Calico, missing in New Mexico since 1988.
In 2012, Mitte was cast in the thriller film House of Last Things.
