Rob Thompson is an American television director, producer and screenwriter.

As a director, some his credits include L.A. Law, The Wonder Years, Doogie Howser, M.D., Dream On, Ed, The Chris Isaak Show, Monk and Northern Exposure. He won a Primetime Emmy Award for his work in the latter series as a part of the producing and writing team in 1992.

A failed window dresser named Nikki (Sondra Locke) overhears of a mysterious Ratboy named Eugene (Sharon Baird, billed in the credits as "S. L. Baird") while dumpster diving at a dump. After finding and befriending him, Nikki makes several attempts at exploiting his uniqueness to the public. At the same time, Eugene wishes to avoid public attention. There is never any explanation for Ratboy's existence as a human/rat hybrid.

Lewis Tater (Jeff Bridges), a 1930s-era aspiring novelist who harbors dreams of becoming the next Zane Grey, decides to leave his family home in Iowa to go to the University of Titan in Nevada so he can soak up the western atmosphere. He arrives to find that there is no university, only a mail order correspondence course scam run by two crooks out of the local hotel. He tries to spend the night at the hotel, and is attacked by one of the men. He escapes his attacker and steals their car, pulling over when it runs out of gas.
