William Russell "Ross" Davidson (25 August 1949 – 16 October 2006) was a British actor best known for his role as Andy O'Brien in the BBC soap opera EastEnders.

Biography

Davidson's first marriage was to a primary school teacher, but this ended within three years. He took his ex-wife's maiden name, Ross, as his stage name.

While working on EastEnders, Davidson famously dated his co-star Shirley Cheriton, who played his on-screen girlfriend Debbie Wilkins. She broke up with Davidson after five years. He married Barbara Black in 2005 and the couple already had a son together; Drew Davidson. They lived together in the Essex resort of Frinton-on-Sea. Barbara Black Davidson had three children from her previous marriage.

In February 2005, Davidson was diagnosed with brain cancer, and swiftly underwent surgery. It was unsuccessful, and a month later he was re-admitted to the Oldchurch Hospital in Romford, where he was told that he had a glioblastoma Grade 4 - the fastest growing, most invasive form of brain cancer.

In July 2005, Davidson went public with the news that his tumour was inoperable and that his life expectancy was 12–18 months. He died 15 months later from the illness, aged 57.

Frederic (Rex Smith) was sent in the care of his nursemaid, Ruth (Angela Lansbury), to be apprenticed to a pilot. But she misunderstood her instructions, being hard of hearing, and apprenticed him instead to a pirate (Kevin Kline). Now he is turning 21 years old, and his service is finished, so he decides to leave the Pirates of Penzance. Ruth wants him to take her with him, but he soon meets some young maidens, the daughters of Major-General Stanley (George Rose), and realizes that Ruth is "plain and old". Frederic quickly falls in love with one of them, Mabel (Linda Ronstadt). He has a strong "sense of duty" and has vowed to lead a blameless life and to exterminate the pirates. Soon, however, the pirates return and seize the girls. Their father then arrives and lies to the pirates, telling them that he is an orphan. He knows that they are orphans themselves and never attack an orphan.

The elderly British employees of the Permanent Assurance Company, a staid London firm which has recently been taken over by the Very Big Corporation of America, rebel against their corporate masters when one of them is sacked. Having locked the surviving supervisors in the safe, and forced their boss to walk a makeshift plank out a window, they commandeer their Edwardian office building, which suddenly weighs anchor, uses its scaffolding and tarpaulins as sails, and is turned into a pirate ship. The stone office building starts to move as if it were a ship. Sailing through the City of London, they then proceed to attack The Very Big Corporation of America's skyscraper, using, among other things, wooden filing cabinets which have been transformed into carronades and swords fashioned from the blades of a ceiling fan. On ropes, they swing into the board room and engage the executives of VBCA in hand-to-hand combat, vanquishing them.
