Stephen Joshua Sondheim est un compositeur et parolier américain de comédies musicales, né à New York le 22 mars 1930 .

Biography

Stephen Sondheim obtient son premier succès en 1957 comme parolier de Leonard Bernstein pour West Side Story. Parmi ses œuvres les plus connues, figurent Le Forum en folie, A Little Night Music et Sweeney Todd. Auteur des paroles de West Side Story et de Gypsy, il a également composé pour le cinéma, notamment pour le film Stavisky (1974) d'Alain Resnais ainsi que pour Reds (1981) et Dick Tracy (1990) de Warren Beatty.

Il est lauréat d'un Oscar (en 1991 pour Sooner or Later du film Dick Tracy), de huit Tony Awards (dont un pour l'ensemble de sa carrière), de nombreux Grammy Awards, d'un prix Pulitzer et d'un Laurence Olivier Award.

Stephen Sondheim a été président de l'association des dramaturges de 1973 à 1981. À l'occasion de son 80e anniversaire, le théâtre Henry Miller a été rebaptisé théâtre Stephen Sondheim le 15 septembre 2010.

The film centers on the experiences of several teenagers at Camp Ovation, a summer theatre camp. The campers are a mishmash of youngsters from different backgrounds and dealing with different issues, but all feel most comfortable while performing. School is out, and the campers reunite as they prepare to board the buses to Camp Ovation. Shy, self-conscious Ellen Lucas happily greets her friends, recovering from an embarrassing situation where she desperately tried to land a prom date, and ended up asking her brother. Nerdy Fritzi Wagner attempts to befriend icy diva Jill Simmons, but ends up toting her luggage instead. Returning camper Jenna Malloran laments that her parents forced her to have her jaw wired shut in order to lose weight. Upon arrival to Camp Ovation, the kids settle in. Ellen converses with her friend Michael Flores, a gay teenager who was violently beaten by his classmates after showing up to his junior prom in drag. The campers are struck dumb with the arrival of Vlad Baumann, a handsome new camper who is, as a staff member marvels, "an honest-to-god straight boy.

In 1846, a barber named Benjamin Barker arrives in London, accompanied by sailor Anthony Hope ("No Place Like London"). Fifteen years earlier, he had been falsely convicted and sentenced to penal transportation from London by the corrupt Judge Turpin, who had lusted after Barker's wife Lucy ("The Barber and His Wife"). Barker adopts the alias "Sweeney Todd" and returns to his old Fleet Street shop, situated above Mrs. Nellie Lovett's meat pie shop ("The Worst Pies in London"). From her, he learns that Turpin raped Lucy, who then poisoned herself with arsenic. The couple's daughter, Johanna, is now Turpin's ward, and, like her mother before her, the object of Turpin's lust ("Poor Thing"). Todd vows revenge, and re-opens his barber shop after Mrs. Lovett returns his straight razors to him ("My Friends"). In the West Side's Lincoln Square neighborhood in Manhattan, there is tension between an Anglo gang, the Jets, led by Riff, and a Puerto Rican gang of immigrants, the Sharks, led by Bernardo. After a brawl erupts ("Prologue"), Lieutenant Schrank and Officer Krupke arrive and break it up, warning both gangs to cease fighting or pay. Despite the warning, the Jets decide to challenge the Sharks to a rumble for neighborhood control at an upcoming dance.
