Tim O'Malley (born June 26, 1957) is an American actor and playwright, director living in Chicago. He is a Core Faculty Member at The Second City Training Center. He is most recognizable as Patrick, the bartender in Return to Me.
Biography
Career
O'Malley started in show business as a singer. He sang with Sony Recording Artist and Grammy Award winner Shawn Colvin in college at Southern Illinois University Carbondale before either of them knew where they were headed. O'Malley later used Shawn's music in his hit play Godshow. He studied Acting and Improvisation with Del Close for two and a half years as well as with Don DePollo, Bernie Sahlins, Keith Johnstone, Sheldon Patinkin and Alexander Technique with Ed Bouchard in Chicago.
He was hired by Joyce Sloane for The Second City Theater in 1986. Toured for 2 years with The Second City Touring Company.
Then became a member of The Second City Resident Company (89' - 93') where he wrote and performed in five original revues.
He teaches at The Second City Training Center in Chicago, where he has been a Core Faculty Member since 1996.
O'Malley wrote his first play in 2003, an auto-biographical play titled Godshow, which sold out for its four years of runs at The Second City Chicago and at I.O. Theater Chicago. O'Malley and Godshow were featured on WTTW's Artbeat Chicago with Phil Ponce, it was the Chicago Reader's Critic's Pick twice, and was number 2 in The Sun-Times "Top Ten Cool Things to Do".
Godshow is a comic/tragic play about O'Malley's struggles with addiction, his quest for success, and faith.
He has been sober for 19 years because of God
Tim can be seen performing now and then appearing with Chicago improv Veterans around Chicago,
and is still looking to mount his second play "9210 S. Winchester".
Early life
O'Malley grew up in the Beverly neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. He is number 10 of 11 children.
Started his singing career at Catholic Mass.
O'Malley attended grammar school at Christ the King, high school at Morgan Park, and college at SIU. He discovered his career path in acting in 1980 after a long search and many changed majors.
