Whitney Blake (born Nancy Ann Whitney; February 20, 1926 – September 28, 2002) was an American film and television actress, director and producer. She is known for her four seasons as Dorothy Baxter, the mother, on the NBC early 1960s sitcom Hazel, and as co-creator and writer of the CBS mid-70s to mid-80s sitcom One Day at a Time. Her daughter is actress Meredith Baxter.
In 1957 Blake married talent agent Jack X Fields; they divorced in 1967.
From August 24, 1968, until her death in 2002, she was married to writer/collaborator Allan Manings (1924–2010).

Biography
Blake married Tom Baxter in 1940 when she was only 14 years old. They had three children: sons, Richard Whitney Baxter (born November 24, 1944) and Brian Thomas Baxter (born February 18, 1946), and daughter, Meredith Ann Baxter (born June 21, 1947). In 1988 her son Brian began co-ownership (with Blake) in a Minneapolis bookstore, Baxter's Books which closed in 1998. Her daughter, Meredith, became an actress.In 1957 Blake married talent agent Jack X Fields; they divorced in 1967.

Managing Editor Sam Gatlin arrives in the afternoon and leaves early the next morning, having put together a morning newspaper for Los Angeles. During the active day in the life of a big city newspaper, Sam and his wife Peggy argue about adopting a child named Billy. A reporter's grandson pilots a military plane from Honolulu to New York. A child is lost in the LA sewers (Gatlin composes a warning headline with picture: "Children Stay Out of These"). And copy boy Earl Collins considers quitting after failing to properly deliver a bet by city editor Jim Bathgate on the sex of children being born to a famous actress. A downpour is occurring during basically the whole movie.

Private investigator Mike Hammer, by assisting a prostitute being assaulted, cannot help noticing a unique ring on her finger. When she later is found murdered that ring is nowhere to be found. From here the story goes to a cache of jewelry stolen by the Nazis during World War II and smuggled out of France after the war by an American army colonel, who, together with Mike Hammer, tries to find the ring and recover all the other jewels. However many parties are on the lookout and the private eye runs into big troubles.

Down on his luck, professional gambler Dan Milner (Robert Mitchum) accepts a mysterious job that will take him out of the country for a year but pays $50,000.
