William Marien Conselman (July 10, 1896 – May 25, 1940) was an American screenwriter who also wrote newspaper comic strips under his Bill Conselman byline and sometimes under the pseudonym Frank Smiley.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Conselman arrived on the West Coast in 1920 and joined the staff of the Los Angeles Times as the assistant city editor. His play And Then What, staged by the San Diego Players, opened November 6, 1923 at Balboa Park's Yorick Theater.

Between 1921 and 1940, he was a screenwriter on 57 films. By 1936, he had an annual income of more than $60,000. In Hollywood, he often collaborated with writer Jack Woodford. Conselman was also a lyricist, and in 1928, he directed the film Four A.

In 1882 (in reality, the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral happened on Oct 26, 1881), Wyatt, Morgan, Virgil, and James Earp are driving cattle to California when they cross Old Man Clanton, played by Walter Brennan. When they learn about the nearby boom town of Tombstone, the older brothers ride in, leaving the youngest brother James to watch over the cattle. The Earps soon learn that Tombstone is a lawless town without a marshal. Wyatt is the only man in the town willing to face the drunk Indian shooting at the townspeople. When they return to their camp, they find the cattle rustled and James murdered.

Buzz Blackwell, Fred Johnson and Axel Swenson are construction workers who are building a bridge. They are good friends and Buzz and Axel even help Fred raising his daughter Patricia. When Fred tragically dies in a fatal accident, Patricia is forced to live with her relatives in New York City whom she has never met. Buzz and Axel decide to depart with her. They soon arrive at her uncle and aunt Jarvis and Brenda, who are horrible persons. Jarvis is a snobby rich man, while Brenda is supercilious. Jarvis has received a letter from Buzz, warning him for their arrival and wants no part in raising Patricia. As they show up, Jarvis pretends to be someone else and sends them to the other "J. Johnson". This is Joe, Patricia's great uncle and husband of Marian. They are poor ex-vaudevillans but welcome them with open arms. Buzz wants to give Joe Fred's money he left him for Patricia, but finds out a drunken Axel used that money to buy a Swedish restaurant. This restaurant, which is doomed to fail, is now the only money bringer for the Johnsons. Buzz is determined to help them out and turns the restaurant in a night club, but is bothered with Jarvis, he has returned to claim "his" money back.

Ellen Neal is hired as servant in the house of the wealthy Winfield family by the butler, Thomas Wroxton, who covets her romantically. Wroxton rules the household staff like a tyrant, demanding a large cut of their weekly wages as his "commission". To his great irritation, Neal resists his advances. Instead, during the family's vacation in New England she becomes romantically involved with the Winfields' son, Richard, who is a college student. They secretly marry and she falls pregnant by him before he returns to college. When the Winfields are told by a vengeful Wroxton that she is pregnant they are initially sympathetic until discovering that the child is their own grandson. Barbara "Ching-Ching" Stewart is an orphan living in Sanchow, China. When bandits threaten, she is sent to Shanghai for safety. Accidentally separated from her guide, Ching-Ching finds herself in Shanghai all alone with her dog until she meets a westerner, Tommy Randall, a rich playboy traveling about the world by ocean liner. Ching-Ching then accidentally becomes a stowaway on his ship. When discovered, she is provided for by Tommy and Susan Parker, a passenger on the ship engaged to the son of her traveling companion, Mrs Ruth Hope. Susan and Tommy become romantically involved. Ching-Ching plays Cupid in furthering their romance. The couple realize they adore Ching-Ching and want to do the best for her after learning she will be put off the ship and sent to an orphan's asylum. Susan breaks her engagement with Richard Hope, Ruth's son, after discovering his selfish nature and marries Tommy. The two adopt Ching-Ching.
