Winston and Weston Doty (February 18, 1914 – January 1, 1934) were twin child actors active for several years during the silent film era.

The Doty twins were among the casualties of the New Year Flood of 1934.

Biography

Winston and Weston - originally Winston and Wilson, though the latter was later changed after the two began appearing in silent films - were born in Malta, Ohio, sons of Lawrence “Jack” and Olive Doty. Their father was a stage and radio actor who had separated from his wife when the boys were fairly young.

The brothers lived with their mother in Chicago, Los Angeles and later in Venice, California. Between 1922 and 1924 Winston and Weston Doty appeared in a handful of silent film shorts and one full length feature, Peter Pan (1924). In 1930 Olive Doty was employed in Los Angeles as an investment manager while her boys clerked at a local grocery store after school hours. Later the twins enrolled together at the University of Southern California where they became popular members of the USC cheerleading squad.

On the night of December 31, 1933, the brothers attended a party at a friend’s house in Montrose, California with their dates, Mary Janet Cox of Venice and Gladys Fisher of Santa Monica. At midnight they called their mother to wish her a Happy New Year, and, upon beginning to drive home, not long afterwards perished when a deluge of water caused by heavy rains swept through the neighborhood, killing some forty people. Of the four, the only one to survive was Weston’s date, Gladys Fisher. Winston and Weston were interred together at the Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery in Santa Monica, California.
In April of the following year, Jack Doty died alone in his hotel room in Chicago at the age of forty-two.

In the story, Peter Pan, a magical boy who refuses to grow up, brings the Darling children (Wendy, John, and Michael) from London to Neverland, where they have adventures that include a confrontation with the pirate Captain Hook and his crew. Later, the children feel homesick and wish to go home. Wendy invites Peter and the Lost Boys to come with them so they can be adopted. The Lost Boys are eager to do so, but Peter refuses because he does not wish to grow up. Wendy and her brothers and the Lost Boys are captured by the pirates, but rescued by Peter, who forces Captain Hook to walk the plank and be eaten by the crocodile who once ate his hand. Wendy and the boys return to the Darling home, where Mrs. Darling meets Peter for the first time and offers to adopt him, but he refuses for the same reason that he refused to go back with Wendy and the boys - he has no intention of growing up. Peter asks Wendy to return to Neverland with him, and Mrs. Darling agrees to allow Wendy to go back once a year to help Peter with his spring cleaning.

The plot revolves around the gang swapping places with a group of runaway boys who are supposed to be taken by train back to San Francisco. While aboard the train, the gang wreaks havoc for the other passengers. Jackie Condon rescues his dog, T-Bone, from the baggage compartment and this causes considerable disturbance with the conductor. He later changes clothes with a little girl, played by Mary Kornman, and they both get spankings by the adults. A traveling salesman volunteers to entertain the children with his noisemakers and fireworks. The gang then parade up and down the train with whistles and kazoos. They set off the fireworks, release sneezing powder (a gag repeated later in the 1930 short Teacher's Pet), pass around other practical jokes and mayhem results. When they finally arrive at San Francisco, the child care worker receives a telegram informing him that he has the wrong children and must take them back.

Wealthy Mrs. Pennington Van Renssalaer, upon hearing of a rival socialite's gathering of "settlement children" for a "lawn fete", decides to conduct a similar picnic of her own. Five boys show up at her house and present her secretary Alvira, played by Clara Guilol, with their invitations. The five boys are Mickey Daniels, Jack Davis, a tall boy wearing glasses and having a snobbish attitude, and the twins, Winston and Weston Doty. Just as Mrs. Van Renssalaer, with her pet monkey, comes out of the house, Booker T. Bacon arrives with his little sister Farina in tow in her toy wagon. Neither of these two children have an invitation. When Alvira tells Jackie that he cannot come because he does not have an invitation either, Jackie’s dog chases her down the street until she is forced to climb a tree out of fright. The monkey gets excited and jumps down, to be chased by Mrs. Van Renssalaer’s chauffeur, (played by William Gillespie), who gets doused with water when the monkey finds a garden hose and turns it on him. When things finally settle down, Mrs. Van Renssalaer, Alvira, the chauffeur, and the five boys get into the limousine. Unbeknownst to them, however, Booker and Jackie stow away on the tailgate with Jackie’s dog sitting beside them, and Farina being pulled along in her little toy wagon.
