Wu Yigong (Chinese: 吴贻弓; December 1, 1938 - ) is a Chinese film director and producer.

Biography

Born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, Wu Yigong enrolled in the directing department of the Beijing Film Academy in 1956. After graduation in 1960, he was appoint as director assistant in Shanghai Haiyan Film Factory.

His first solo film, My Memories of Old Beijing (城南旧事), won the 3rd Golden Rooster Award for best director. His other films include Evening Rain (巴山夜雨) (1st Golden Rooster Award for best motion picture) (co-directed with Wu Yonggang), The Tribulations of a Young Master (少爷的磨难), and A Confucius Family (阙里人家), among others.

Wu served as the president of the Shanghai Film Studio, as well as the general manager of the General Shanghai Film Corporation and the president of the Shanghai Film Bureau.

He joined CPC in June 1985, and was an alternate member of 14th and 15th Central Committees of Communist Party of China.

During the time the "Gang of Four” is on the rampage in China, a poet named Qiu Shi who has been in prison for 6 years is secretly transferred from Sichuan to Wuhan by boat under the guard of Li Yan and Liu Wenying. They meet six passengers on the boat – a poor girl named Xing Hua who had to work as a prostitute to pay her debts, a just woman teacher, an old actor of Beijing Opera, a frail elderly woman who has just lost her son, a young worker who has a clear stand on what to love and what to hate, and a little girl in rags. One night, feeling hopeless about her life, Xin Hua commits suicide by jumping into the river. Qiu Shi saves her and uses his own experience to encourage the poor girl. All the people aboard are deeply moved by this brave poet, including Li Yan and Liu Wenying. It turns out that the girl in rags is Qiu Shi’s daughter. With the help of the passengers aboard, Qiu Shi with his daughter finally regain freedom.

Tang Shuisheng (Wang Xiaoxiao) has arrived in Shanghai to work for a Triad Boss (played by Li Baotian), also named Tang. He is taken to a warehouse where two rival groups of Triads carry out an opium deal that goes wrong, leaving one of the rival members dead. Shuisheng is then taken by his uncle to Tang's palatial home, where he is assigned to serve Xiao Jinbao (Gong Li), a cabaret singer and mistress of the Boss. It is soon learned that Jinbao is also carrying on an affair with the Boss's number two man, Song (Sun Chun).
