Yuki Shimoda (August 10, 1921 – May 21, 1981) was an American actor best known for his starring role as Ko Wakatsuki in the NBC movie of the week, Farewell to Manzanar in 1976. He also co-starred in a 1960s television series, Johnny Midnight (39 episodes), with Edmond O'Brien. He was a star of the silver screen, early television and the stage. His Broadway theater stage credits include Auntie Mame with Rosalind Russell, nominated for eight Tony Awards and winner of three Tonys, and Pacific Overtures, a Stephen Sondheim Broadway musical directed by Harold Prince nominated for ten Tony Awards.

A jaded pilot named Noah Dugan (Gould) is unemployed and owes a large amount of money due to his gambling. He goes to an old friend, Stoney (Vincent Gardenia), who owns an airfield. He is offered a job flying a cargo of animals to a remote South Pacific island aboard a B-29 bomber, a large plane well past its prime (having born the brunt of U.S. combat against Japan decades earlier during World War II). Bernadette Lafleur (Bujold) is the prim missionary who accompanies him. Asano, un industriel japonais dont la famille a elle aussi été beaucoup touchée par la guerre. Leur amitié naissante est malmenée lorsque Jerry suspecte M. Asano, lui-même un des négociateurs du traité, d'avoir cherché un gain politique dans cette relation. Bien que M Jacoby n'y croie pas vraiment, elle refuse de voir M. Bertha Jacoby (Rosalind Russell), a Jewish widow, is convinced by her daughter Alice Black (Madlyn Rhue) to move from Brooklyn, New York to Tokyo, in order for Bertha to be closer to her along with her husband, Jerry Black (Ray Danton), now stationed at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo. Her feelings about the Japanese with regards to her son's death in World War II start to change on board the ship to Tokyo, where she meets Koichi Asano, a Japanese Buddhist businessman (Alec Guinness), who also lost a spouse and two children in the War. The two share a bond over lives, their families, and their faiths, which develops into a romance. When she announces to her family of Asano's courtship, her daughter and son-in-law object to the idea of an interracial marriage. The movie ends with the two enjoying a Sabbath dinner.
