Mosfilm (Russian: Мосфильм, [məsˈfʲilʲm]) is a film studio often described as the largest and oldest in Russia and in Europe. Its output includes most of the more widely acclaimed Soviet-era films, ranging from works by Tarkovsky and Eisenstein (commonly considered the greatest Soviet directors), to Red Westerns, to the Akira Kurosawa co-production Dersu Uzala (Дерсу Узала) and the epic War and Peace (Война и Мир).

À la suite de la fusion des deux entreprises le directeur de l'une d'entre elles, Sergueï Abrikossov, est poussé à prendre la retraite. Il se retrouve soudain privé de ce qui était le sens de sa vie. La nouvelle de la mort de sa première épouse porte un coup supplémentaire à son morale. Sa famille non plus ne lui apporte pas de consolation. Son fils semble n'avoir aucun objectif dans la vie contrairement à lui au même âge, ils n'ont rien à partager. Les loisirs de sa femme le laissent indifférent. Avec amertume, Abrikossov constate que son temps est révolu.

Viktoria Svobodina is a young but already well known popular singer in the Soviet Union, living in Moscow. Her popularity reaches the heights whilst the band she is performing with remains in the shadows. At an important live concert the band turns off the sound, but Viktoria keeps singing the song, changing the lyrics to "I will sing till the end". As they leave the concert she stops the car and rips posters of herself off the walls of the concert hall and leaves the band for a solo career.
