The story takes place in the 1950s. Konstantin “Kostik” Romin (Oleg Menshikov) has come to Moscow to study history and is staying with kindly aunt Alisa (Sofya Pilyavskaya), who lives in a "communal apartment" building there. His life soon becomes intertwined with those of the other residents. Among them are Margarita Pavlovna (Inna Ulyanova) and both her former husband Lev Khobotov (Anatoly Ravikovich), a publisher of foreign poetry, and her new beau, WW2 veteran and engraver-turned-teacher Savva Ignatevich (Viktor Bortsov).

A kind, yet naïve, ethnography student named Shurik (Demyanenko), known from earlier films as a student at the Polytechnic Institute, goes to the Caucasus to learn ancient customs and traditions practiced by the locals, including local "myths, legends, and toasts". At the start of the film, Shurik is making his way along a mountain road in the Caucasus on a donkey. He comes upon a truck driver named Edik whose truck refuses to start. The donkey gets stubborn and neither man is able to get his respective mode of transportation going.

On a bus a boor and drunkard named Fedya takes a seat reserved for children and disabled persons and then refuses to let a young pregnant woman sit claiming that "she is neither a child nor handicapped". Shurik, who is riding on the same bus, puts on a pair of sunglasses, and pretends to be visually impaired. When Fedya is urged to let him sit in his seat, Shurik offers the seat to the pregnant woman. Fedya is enraged at being deceived and gets into a fight with Shurik. As a result, Fedya is arrested and sentenced to 15 days of Community service, Russian administrative arrest or simply '15 sutok' (15 days). Ironically, he is sent to serve his term to the same construction site where Shurik works part-time. The manager puts them on the same work crew. Fedya does not do his work properly, bullies Shurik, and plans to get revenge on the young student. When Shurik finally hits back, the two get involved in a Tom and Jerry-style chase throughout the construction site using building equipment and various materials as weapons. In the end Fedya is subdued and reeducated by Shurik.

The trio of Fool, Coward, and Experienced decides to get rich with the help of their samogon-making apparatus. The making of samogon goes well, and towards the end of their "work shift", they decide to try some of their product. During dinner, they think that someone had approached their izba (concealed in woods with a false "nature reserve" sign to deter people). While the trio is distracted, their dog smashes some bottles of samogon. The dog also takes the condenser coil, and while being chased by the trio, leads them to the militsiya.

The setting is a small fishing village. The film begins in the Soviet Union in spring of 1946, as truck driver Andrei Sokolov (Bondarchuk) and his young son travel along a road in the country and run into a man Sokolov recognizes as a fellow military driver. 1905, à Nijni Novgorod. Vlassov et son fils Pavel sont ouvriers dans une importante usine et, comme tous, y sont exploités. Vlassov meurt d'alcoolisme. Pavel prend conscience de la misère qui règne et milite afin d'amener les ouvriers à se révolter. Sa mère, tout en soumission, adhère cependant peu à peu aux idées de son fils, luttant contre elle-même et apprend à lire pour pouvoir mieux appréhender la situation. La mère distribue les tracts du mouvement révolutionnaire lors de la préparation d'une grève. Mais Pavel est plusieurs fois arrêté, emprisonné et relâché. La mère poursuit l'action de son fils quand il est condamné à être déporté en Sibérie et aux travaux forcés. Elle se rend compte qu'il n'y a que la révolution qui peut apporter la justice.

Kortchaguine perd progressivement la vue, mais ressemble les dernières forces pour terminer le livre de ses mémoires.
