Republic Pictures was an American independent film production-distribution corporation with studio facilities, operating from 1935 through 1959, and was best known for specializing in westerns, movie serials, and B films emphasizing mystery and action.
The studio was also responsible for financing and distributing one Shakespeare film, Orson Welles' Macbeth (1948), and several of the films of John Ford during the 1940s and early 1950s. It was also notable for developing the careers of John Wayne, Gene Autry, and Roy Rogers.

Ace report Steve Haines is on the trail of Edward Baldwin, the former head of a public utilities company that has bankrupted and defrauded its investors out of their life savings. Haines trails Baldwin to an ocean liner where he is planning to flee to Europe. During the voyage Haines is impressed by the company on the ship, including a famous actor and his singing daughter and a gangster. Haines organises a pantomime melodrama to entertain the passengers using his new acquaitances and convinces Baldwin to take a role playing a man who is murdered. Prior to going on the stage the prop revolver is replaced with a real one.

Set in the 1890s, undercover federal agents John Tipton (John Wayne) and Bridger (Lane Chandler) heads for Crocket City Wyoming to supervise the vote on whether to join the Union. The film is set in 1861. John Blair (John Wayne) and his partner, Larry Adams (Lane Chandler) are dismayed when the arrival of telegraph ends the Pony Express. Hoping to utilize their horse-riding skills, they decide to start a stage coach transportation business. They go to Buchanan City and ask local magnate Cal Drake (Douglas Cosgrove) if he is willing to sell them a stage coach. Instead, Drake offers them a franchise from his own stage coach line - a line out to bustling Crescent City.
