American Intelligence officials learn that Soviet spies have begun exploring a remote region of the Alaskan Territory in search of answers to the worldwide reports of "flying saucers." The story picks up as Frankie Faulkner fails in his attempt to blackmail the district attorney, Joseph Foster, into letting his boss, Hansen, go free from the charges against him. Frankie goes on to recruit young Larry Price, a criminal in the making, to join the boys' club led by Reverend Thomas Garfield, for which Frankie is a sponsor. Joseph is very keen on convicting Hansen for his crimes. He tells the reverend that he literally is prepared to "sell his soul" to get the job done. Later, Joseph is contacted by a man called Nick Beal, who wants to meet him at a dodgy café by the waterfront, called the "China Coast".

Marvin Payne (Stewart) is a World War II army air force veteran trying to make it on a shoe-string with a startup air-freight business. On an overnight stay in New York he has the misfortune of being roomed next to the reluctant bride Dee Dee Dillwood (Fontaine) and her rather formal husband Henry Benson. A ruckus causes Payne to become enmeshed in the world of Miss Dillwood. Hiding from her husband, Payne assumes the rather vague Miss Dillwood is a penniless country girl come to the city, who has descended to sleeping with married men to get by. He grudgingly agrees to give her a lift out of town and encourages her to go back to her parents. All the while Payne does not realize that Miss Dillwood is independently wealthy, and the married man she was to sleep with was the man she had just exchanged vows with that afternoon. Meanwhile, Payne's fellow veteran and co-pilot, Bullets Baker (Albert) encourages Payne to relax and enjoy life. His encouragements to join him and a couple of young ladies for a few laughs fall on deaf ears. It is with great surprise than that Baker finds a girl in the straight-laced Payne's room the following morning. A rough and tumble flight across country result in a number of surprises, not the least of which is that Marvin discovers he cares for the tag-along Miss Dillwood.

The film opens in St. Louis, Missouri, on Lutie Cameron's (Katharine Hepburn) wedding day. She has had a short courtship with a cattle rancher of New Mexico. As she dresses, she receives a telegram from her fiancé Col. Brewton (Spencer Tracy) telling her to board the train for New Mexico to marry him in the small town of Salt Fork. The first person she meets in town is Brice Chamberlain (Melvyn Douglas), who warns her of likely unhappiness with Brewton, locally considered a tyrant. Bill Baker (Bill Williams) has recently returned from war service as an aerial gunner in the Pacific where he had been hospitalized for mental illness. On his way to New York he meets a group of new characters on the train: painting artist Vickie North (Barbara Hale) and her brother Jamie (Lanny Rees), plus Louie (Sam Levene), an ex-convict. Louie mistakes Bill for a fellow gangster when he says he has "just got out" and offers him to come work for his gangster boss, Tiny McBride (Nestor Paiva). Bill talks to Louie about his numerous dizzy spells and his severe case of hypochondria. Later on the train, Bill ia accidentally knocked unconscious when a case falls down from a shelf onto his head.
