The film is based on a Hindi novel Athara Sooraj Ke Paudhe by Ramesh Bakshi about a railways employee who meets a girl on the train. Film's music was classical musicians, Hariprasad Chaurasia and Bhubaneshwar Mishra, while the production design was by Bansi Chandragupta.
At the 21st National Film Awards, the film won the Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi as well as Best Cinematography for Apurba Kishore Bir. Film's director Avatar Kaul, died in an accident the same week the awards were announced. It was his only film.
Synopsis
The film is set on 27 Down, the Bombay-Varanasi Express, Sanjay (M.K. Raina) is on a pilgrimage journey to Varanasi (Banaras), and remembers his life in flashbacks. Sanjay gives up his dreams to become an artist, in order to support his family he takes up his father's profession of railways employee. He spends his days as railways ticket checker, till he meets a Life Insurance Corporation employee, Shalini (Raakhee), on the suburban train. After a few more meetings, they falls in love, and Sanjay starts seeing life differently, but when his father finds about their relationship, he fixes his marriage with some other girl.Actors

The Canfield and McKay families have been feuding for so long, no one remembers the reason the feud started in the first place. Railroad supervisor Carl Buckley (Broderick Crawford) gets fired from his job. He persuades his seductive wife to pay a visit to an important railroad customer in order to try to get his job back. The film follows the friends of a recently deceased minor painter Jean-Baptiste Emmerich as they take a train from Paris to Limoges, where he is to be buried, attend his funeral, then gather at the home of his twin brother, Lucien. The film opens just as construction has been completed on a railway connecting a mountainous regions of eastern Bosnia and western Serbia in 1992. Luka, a Serbian engineer, has moved to Bosnia from Belgrade with his mentally unstable wife, Jadranka, and his football-playing son, Miloš, to run a railway station and act as caretaker. Luka is at work preparing the opening of the railway while Miloš attempts to become a professional footballer with the Partizan team. Utterly engrossed in his work and blinded by natural optimism, Luka remains deaf to the increasingly persistent rumblings of war, which has broken out in Croatia and threatens to spread.
