A Lady to Love is a 1930 American drama film directed by Victor Sjöström and written by Sidney Howard. The film stars Vilma Bánky, Edward G. Robinson, Robert Ames, Richard Carle and Lloyd Ingraham. The film was released on February 28, 1930, by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Synopsis

Tony, a prosperous Italian vineyardist in California, advertises for a young wife, passing off a photograph of his handsome hired man, Buck, as himself. Lena, a San Francisco waitress, takes up the offer, and though she is disillusioned upon discovering the truth, she goes through with the marriage because of her desire to have a home and partially because of her weakness for Buck, whose efforts to take her away from Tony confirm her love for her husband.

Paul Beaumont (Lon Chaney) is a scientist who labored for years alone to prove his radical theories on the origin of mankind. Baron Regnard (Marc McDermott) becomes his patron, enabling him to do research while living in his mansion. A man who calls himself Kári is offered a job by a wealthy widow named Halla. En Chine, une jeune femme du nom de Ming Toy, est proche d'être vendue par son père aux enchères quand Billy Benson, un jeune et élégant américain, arrivant de son pays natal dans l'espoir de trouver une chinoise à marier, surenchérit et la sauve de l'esclavage. Mais ses parents, horrifiés à la pensée de voir leur fils épouser une chinoise, la rejettent. Crainte vite effacée quand elle leur explique qu'elle est une femme blanche, qu'elle a été élevée par une famille chinoise lorsque ses parents, un couple de missionnaires, furent assassinés, expliquant alors sa proximité avec la culture et les mœurs chinois dont elle est imprégnés. Les parents décident alors de bénir leur union.

Bianca, la star du trapèze du cirque Baretti, aime Tito, le clown, et subit les avances du prince héritier d'Illyria, qui se fait appeler le Comte Cassati. Le prince poursuit aussi de ses assiduités la femme d'un propriétaire terrien des environs, et tue son mari lorsque celui-ci les trouve ensemble. Rendu fou par les refus constants de Bianca, le prince la fait venir dans son hôtel particulier à l'aide d'une fausse lettre, mais elle s'en évade par la fenêtre grâce à ses talents de gymnaste. Tito vient à son aide et lors d'une lutte avec le prince le fait tomber à la mer à travers une fenêtre. D'une ressemblance étonnante avec le prince, Tito assume cette nouvelle identité pour éviter les poursuites. Comme elle croit que Tito a été tué par le prince, Bianca quitte le cirque pour assouvir sa vengeance. Lors du couronnement, elle est sur le point d'assassiner le "prince" lorsque celui-ci lui révèle sa véritable identité. Ensemble ils rejoignent alors le cirque.
