A man who calls himself Kári is offered a job by a wealthy widow named Halla. Eventually they fall in love, but one day in church a man recognizes Kári as his true identity - the escaped criminal Eyvind of the Hills. Eyvind has to flee to the highlands, and Halla decides to go with him. There they have a child and live happily in love, providing food by hunting and fishing, until one day when Eyvind's old friend Arnas appears, also an outlaw, and falls in love with Halla too. Other people are conspiring to get rid of the criminal as well, and the living conditions for Eyvind and Halla start to become worse and worse.

Terje Vigen lives happily with his wife and little girl on a small island in Norway. In 1809, because of the English blockade, poor people start starving and he decides to row to Denmark to bring food to his family. On the way back, he is captured by a ruthless English captain and sent to jail in England. When he was finally freed in 1814 and can return home, he finds that his wife and daughter have died. He takes up a solitary life in his house overlooking the sea. One night he sees a British yacht in distress in a storm. He rushed to her help and discovers that the skipper is the same man that had taken him prisoner and broken his life many years before.

Sven Holm and his wife Ingeborg are happily married with three children, and are about to open a shop in Stockholm. They open the shop, but Sven contracts tuberculosis and dies. Ingeborg initially tries to run the shop by herself, but when she fails and develops a debilitating ulcer, she turns to the poorhouse for help. The poorhouse board does not grant her enough assistance to survive outside the workhouse. She has to sell the shop, her house, and board the three children out to foster families.

Lili et son amie assistent à une réunion à Stockholm où la suffragette anglaise Miss Spratt de Londres exalte l'enthousiasme de la petite troupe. Pendant ce temps, les hommes font la vaisselle et le ménage avec maladresse. Les suffragettes vont dans un local dont elles brisent les fenêtres à coups de haches, mais un incendie se propage dans le sous-sol. Elles sont effrayées par un couple de fantômes qui éteignent rapidement le feu ; en fait ce sont leurs maris qui se sont déguisés. En rentrant à la maison, Lili fait un horrible cauchemar avec des fenêtres brisées et sa propre décapitation.
