A Man Named Rocca (French: Un nommé La Rocca, Italian: Quello che spara per primo) is a 1961 French-Italian crime-thriller film directed by Jean Becker and starring Jean Paul Belmondo. It is based on the 1968 novel L'Excommunié by José Giovanni. The film made admissions of 1,193,387 in France.
Synopsis
Roberto La Rocca, au passé trouble, s'est retiré des « affaires » à la campagne. Un jour, un informateur lui apprend que son ami Xavier Adé a été injustement incarcéré pour meurtre. Afin de venir en aide à son ami, La Rocca contacte à Marseille Villanova, l'ex-associé de Xavier qu'il soupçonne de cette machination. Lors de leur affrontement, La Rocca l'abat et, du coup, renoue avec le milieu en accaparant son tripot. Il poursuit néanmoins son objectif en joignant Geneviève, la sœur de Xavier. Lors d'un racket, il est blessé et capturé. Il retrouve Xavier en prison. On leur propose d'anticiper leur libération s'ils acceptent de participer au déminage de garrigues maritimes restées piégées depuis la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Lors de l'une de ces dangereuses opérations, Xavier perd un bras en voulant protéger La Rocca. Cet acte héroïque leur vaut d'être immédiatement libérés. Pour l'avenir, Xavier et Geneviève souhaitent s'associer avec La Rocca en achetant ensemble une grande propriété. Sans en informer La Rocca, Xavier profite de l'infirmité de Nevada, un riche truand, pour lui extorquer l'argent nécessaire. Pendant que Xavier est parti signer l'acte d’achat, les hommes de main de Nevada font irruption à son domicile où ils trouvent La Rocca et Geneviève. Durant la rixe qui s'ensuit, Geneviève est mortellement blessée en s'interposant devant le revolver qui visait La Rocca. Celui-ci rompt définitivement son amitié avec Xavier qu'il rend responsable du décès de Geneviève.Actors

In this tragic tale of misunderstanding, obsession, and increasing madness, "Elle," a beautiful young woman (Isabelle Adjani) settles into a small town in the south of France with her introverted mother (Maria Machado) and physically handicapped father and soon becomes the subject of wild speculation because of her aloofness and at the same time, her obvious sexuality. The young woman is actually caught up in the desire to avenge the long-ago rape of her mother, a rape committed by three men who had arrived at her isolated house in a van which contained an old piano which they were delivering. A shy car mechanic (Alain Souchon) becomes enamored of her, and the woman suddenly sees him in a different light when she learns that his father, now dead, was an Italian immigrant who had owned and tried unsuccessfully to pawn the piano. Intent on taking action against the mechanic's family to right the wrong suffered by her mother, the daughter begins to lose her grip on sanity when she finds out that the men she suspects of the rape are actually innocent. In fact, her father had long ago exacted his own vengeance on the real culprits. This knowledge pushes her over the edge, and she has to be institutionalized. Meanwhile, the young mechanic misunderstands what happened and that leads to tragedy; he tracks down and kills the innocent men Elle had suspected of raping her mother, believing them to be responsible for Elle's current condition.

Michel (Jean-Paul Belmondo) is a youthful criminal who is intrigued with the film persona of Humphrey Bogart. After stealing a car in Marseille, Michel shoots and kills a policeman who has followed him onto a country road. Penniless and on the run from the police, he turns to an American love interest Patricia (Jean Seberg), a student and aspiring journalist, who sells the New York Herald Tribune on the streets of Paris. The ambivalent Patricia unwittingly hides him in her apartment as he simultaneously tries to seduce her and call in a loan to fund their escape to Italy. At one point, Patricia says she is pregnant with Michel's child. She learns that Michel is on the run when questioned by the police. Eventually she betrays him, but before the police arrive she tells Michel what she has done. He is somewhat resigned to a life in prison, and does not try to escape at first. The police shoot him in the street and, after a prolonged death run, he dies “à bout de souffle” (out of breath).

Policeman Philippe Jordan works in Marseille. He intercepts the delivery of a shipload of heroin by jumping out of a helicopter onto a speedboat and throws all drugs into the sea. The French gangster Abel Davos is on the run from the police. He has been tried in absentia and sentenced to death. He flees to Italy together with his wife Thérèse and their two children. He performs a successful holdup in Milano with his accomplice Raymond, but chased by the police the two decide to return to France. Entering France on a seemingly deserted beach, the small group is surprised by two customs officers and end up in a gunfight, where Thérèse and Raymond are killed.
