A Man There Was (Swedish: Terje Vigen) is a 1917 Swedish drama directed by Victor Sjöström, based on a poem of the same title by Henrik Ibsen. At a cost of 60,000 SEK it was the by then most expensive Swedish film ever made, marking a new direction in Swedish cinema with more funding to fewer films, resulting in more total quality.

This film is considered to be the start of the golden age of Swedish silent film that would end after Gösta Berlings saga in 1925, although films such as Ingeborg Holm from as early as 1913 are often assigned to this era as well.

Synopsis

Terje Vigen lives happily with his wife and little girl on a small island in Norway. In 1809, because of the English blockade, poor people start starving and he decides to row to Denmark to bring food to his family. On the way back, he is captured by a ruthless English captain and sent to jail in England. When he was finally freed in 1814 and can return home, he finds that his wife and daughter have died. He takes up a solitary life in his house overlooking the sea. One night he sees a British yacht in distress in a storm. He rushed to her help and discovers that the skipper is the same man that had taken him prisoner and broken his life many years before.

A man who calls himself Kári is offered a job by a wealthy widow named Halla. Eventually they fall in love, but one day in church a man recognizes Kári as his true identity - the escaped criminal Eyvind of the Hills. Eyvind has to flee to the highlands, and Halla decides to go with him. There they have a child and live happily in love, providing food by hunting and fishing, until one day when Eyvind's old friend Arnas appears, also an outlaw, and falls in love with Halla too. Other people are conspiring to get rid of the criminal as well, and the living conditions for Eyvind and Halla start to become worse and worse.

Le fils d'un riche horticulteur se fiance avec la fille d'un vieil employé de son père. L'horticulteur ne voit pas d'un bon œil cette relation et trouve le moyen d'éloigner brutalement son fils ; mais un soir le père moleste la jeune fille et tente de l'agresser sexuellement. Ensuite à la suite d'un différend, l'horticulteur renvoie le père de la jeune fille. Le père et la fille trouvent refuge auprès d'un vieil officier très âgé. Le père meurt bientôt et le vieux militaire prend la jeune fille à son service, la traitant finalement comme sa fille. Quand le vieil homme vient à mourir à son tour, ses héritiers chassent la jeune fille de la maison et celle-ci tombe dans une vie dissolue. Un jour, dans un accès de désespoir, elle s'introduit dans la serre de l'horticulteur et détruit toutes ses fleurs. Elle est retrouvée morte au petit matin.

Une jeune femme, Helga, met au monde un enfant illégitime. Le père présumé refuse de le reconnaître et la fille se trouve rejetée par la communauté villageoise. Fort heureusement, le fils d'un propriétaire terrien, Gudmund, éprouve de la compassion et réussit à la faire embaucher comme servante auprès de sa mère. Mais, elle sera reconnaissante lorsque l'infortunée jeune femme apportera les preuves de l'innocence de Gudmund, injustement accusé de meurtre à l'issue d'une rixe.
