A Modern Musketeer is a 1917 American silent adventure comedy film directed and written by Allan Dwan. Based on the short story, "D’Artagnan of Kansas" by E.P. Lyle, Jr., the film was produced by and stars Douglas Fairbanks. A now complete and restored print of the film still exists and is currently in the public domain.

Synopsis

The film opens with a sequence in which D'Artagnan (Douglas Fairbanks) rides up to a tavern on horseback and ends up brawling with sword and fist with the patrons inside in his haste to approach a fair young stranger. After triumphing, he morphs into modern day Ned Thacker (also played by Fairbanks).

Reginald "Reggie" Burroughs est en Europe depuis 15 ans. Le prenant pour Reggie, les tantes lui disent qu'il doit se marier avec Olive Van Tassell et que sa sœur doit épouser Gideon Van Tassell. Comme les deux femmes sont en fait amoureuses d'autres hommes, Mr. Fix-It refuse d'épouser Olive et va aider les deux jeunes femmes dans leurs histoires d'amour. Lorsqu'il rencontre Mary McCollough et ses nombreux frères et sœurs, Mr. Fix-It les invite tous dans la propriété des Burroughs, où ils vont gagner le cœur des vieilles tantes. Puis après quelques péripéties, il gagnera le cœur de Mary.

The opening has the dashing Earl of Huntingdon besting his bitter enemy, Sir Guy of Gisbourne, in a joust. Huntingdon then joins King Richard the Lion-Hearted, who is going off to fight in the Crusades and has left his brother, Prince John, as regent. The prince soon emerges as a cruel, treacherous tyrant. Goaded on by Sir Guy, he usurps Richard's throne. When Huntingdon receives a message from his paramour, Lady Marian Fitzwalter, telling him of all that has transpired, he requests permission to return to England. King Richard assumes that the Earl has turned coward and denies him permission. The Earl seeks to leave in spite of this, but is ambushed by Sir Guy and imprisoned as a deserter. Upon escaping from his confines, he returns to England, endangering his life and honor, to oppose Prince John and restore King Richard's throne. He finds himself and his friends outlawed and Marian apparently dead.
