Synopsis
M. Milan (Richard Berry) est un tueur à gages qui doit exécuter son « contrat » depuis sa chambre d'hôtel donnant sur le palais de justice de Nice où est attendu Randoni (Michel Aumont), témoin clé d'un procès en corruption et homme à abattre. Son voisin, François Pignon (Patrick Timsit), photographe de presse délaissé par son épouse (Virginie Ledoyen) qui l’a quitté pour le docteur Wolf (Pascal Elbé), un neurologue réputé, essaye de se suicider en se pendant à la tuyauterie de la salle de bains et provoque une inondation. Milan persuade le garçon d'hôtel de ne pas appeler la police, promettant de veiller lui-même sur le dépressif pour éviter une récidive. Il se trouve alors englué irrémédiablement dans les problèmes de Pignon au détriment de sa mission.Actors

A teenaged boy has run away from home. His father is ineffective at finding him, so his mother contacts two former lovers from around the time her son was conceived, telling them both that the child is their son and asking them to look for him. One of them (Depardieu) is a tough journalist investigating the Mafia, while the other (Richard) is a timid former teacher who was on the verge of committing suicide when he received the telephone call. The two former boyfriends finally meet, and together they locate the son. They both argue who is really the father. In the end the son tells both Depardieu and Richard (while the other is out of earshot) that his mother thinks that he is the father. Thus, the son adopts both of them as his fathers, and also reconciles with his real father.

Ralph Milan is a contract killer who is paid to kill Louis Randoni, whose testimony in various trials could harm the organisation. Ralph waits for his prey in his hotel room, but is interrupted by his comical neighbour, a shirt salesman named François Pignon (Jacques Brel). Pignon, who is suicidal since his wife left him for a reputed doctor named Fuchs (Jean-Pierre Darras), tries to hang himself on the waterpipes, but only manages to cause a flood. Realizing that if Pignon tries to kill himself again the police will search the place, Milan offers to talk him out of it until after his assassination. Unfortunately Pignon starts irritating him more, and makes it more difficult for him to fulfill his contract killing.
