Synopsis
Jenny et Jay Barton forment un couple des plus heureux. Parents d'une fillette de six ans, ils ont réussi professionnellement et Jenny attend un deuxième enfant? Mais lors de l'accouchement, la jeune femme est victime d'une attaque cérébrale. Annalisse Vellum (Tiffani-Amber Thiessen) is a young woman who, along with her mother Laura Vellum (Melinda Culea), move back to her mother's hometown, sometime after the death of her father. They rent the home of a Laura's old school classmate, Clay Roff (Tim Matheson), whose troubled teenage daughter Mary (Erika Flores) disappeared sometime earlier. Clay invites the two women to dinner at his house, where they meet his current wife, Danielle Roff (Kelly Rutherford), and his young daughter, Heather. Soon after moving in, Annalisse starts having nightmares about a woman falling over a cliff, and is being haunted by the spirit of Mary. Annalisse begins to suspect foul play in Mary's disappearance and the death of Mary's mother, Ann, who she was having the nightmares about. When she was 16 years old, Laurie met and fell in love with an older man, 31-year-old Bruce Kellogg. She soon moves in with him and doesn't know that her stepfather actually sold her to him for $500. They are happy at first, but it soon becomes clear that he has an obsession with young girls. Naive, Laurie doesn't notice anything and does everything to please him. Bruce grows to become more violent and begins regularly beating her up. Laurie eventually encourages her teenage friends to kill him. After the murder, she is charged with the killing of her husband. From thereon, it is up to her to prove that she was a victim of domestic violence.

In late 1969, Billy Covington (Robert Downey Jr.) works as a helicopter traffic pilot for a Los Angeles radio station, but after breaking several safety regulations on the job, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration suspends his pilot's license. In 1968, America was divided over the Vietnam War. Due to the growing anti-war movement, President Lyndon B. Johnson announced that he would not run for re-election. Democrat Robert Kennedy, the Presidential hopeful, was assassinated that summer. The Democratic National Convention was held in Chicago where leaders of the anti-war movement planned a protest. During the protest, Chicago Mayor Daley used police force to brutally quell the rally, and as a result, rioting broke out in the streets. One person was killed, hundreds were injured and thousands were arrested. One year later, newly elected President Richard Nixon gave the green light to prosecute eight men who were accused of conspiracy to incite a riot. The FBI brought them to Chicago, where they stood trial. They were known thereafter as The Chicago 8.
