Add to a movie listThe Wash is a 1985 Japanese film by Philip Kan Gotanda, based on his play of the same name. It tells the story of a newly separated nisei couple, husband Nobu and wife Masi, and their individual and collective struggles with their past, which along with their marriage centered on Japanese tradition, despite their residing in the United States.
After what is implied to be many stressful years of mistreatment, Masi leaves Nobu early in the story due to his intolerably sexist nature, and is able to move on and begins dating the widower Sadao. Nobu does not similarly move on, and begins to panic at the loss of Masi. As a result of this "abandonment", as Nobu tends to classify it, Nobu is forced to confront both his traumatic memories of the Japanese internment camps, which the story establishes as the root of his inflexible nature, and the reality of the consequences this inflexibility has finally produced for him. The story does not end with any reunion between Masi and Nobu; Masi not only stays with Sadao, but also, symbolically, in the final scene, refuses to any longer do Nobu's clothes wash for him, as she had during all the years of their marriage. It is, of course, this aspect of the plot from which the story's name is obtained.
The Wash was first performed as a play in 1985; Gotanda then wrote the screenplay for the 1988 independent film version.

When she was 16 years old, Laurie met and fell in love with an older man, 31-year-old Bruce Kellogg. She soon moves in with him and doesn't know that her stepfather actually sold her to him for $500. They are happy at first, but it soon becomes clear that he has an obsession with young girls. Naive, Laurie doesn't notice anything and does everything to please him. Bruce grows to become more violent and begins regularly beating her up. Laurie eventually encourages her teenage friends to kill him. After the murder, she is charged with the killing of her husband. Annalisse Vellum (Tiffani-Amber Thiessen) is a young woman who, along with her mother Laura Vellum (Melinda Culea), move back to her mother's hometown, sometime after the death of her father. In 1936, Jack McGurn (Quaid) is a motion picture projectionist, involved in a campaign of harassment against non-union theaters in New York City. My Robot Baby A young Marsha hides in the closet from her parents' fighting due to a mistake she has made. Marsha apologizes when her mother finds her in the closet; her mother tells Marsha to never fall in love, get married, and have children. Twenty-five years later, Marsha is married to Ray and they are looking towards adopting a child. After going to an adoption clinic, they apply for an adoption trial where they take care of a robotic baby before they can adopt a human child. Marsha begins to struggle when she is alone to take care of the robot baby, as she becomes flustered with what to do when the baby cries. Marsha brings the robot baby to her father, a handyman, and sees if he can tamper with the electronics of the robot. However, Marsha’s father worries that the doctors of the adoption clinic will detect the alteration of the robot. Nonetheless, Marsha persists on getting the baby reprogrammed and leaves the baby to her father while Marsha goes to work. As Marsha comes home to the robot baby now automated, she attempts to talk to the baby. However, the robot baby goes berserk and attacks Marsha. Marsha finds the robot baby in the closet, then remembers her young self hiding in the closet as her own mother was angry. Marsha then cries and is able to hug her robot baby, finding closure to her past.
