Synopsis
Kunju Gounder (Balu Anand) is a respected village chief, he seeks his missed son (Senthil). Panju Gounder, worked as a servant in Kunju Gounder's house and married his sister. Now, Panju Gounder (Pandu) tries hard to be respected by the villagers.Actors

Vaanavaraayan (Rajinikanth) plays the role of a feudal chieftain, adored and respected by his village people. He lives with his grandparents (M. N. Nambiar & Manorama). Following his advice, they abstain from voting in the elections and instead, pool the money given by the candidates to get themselves some basic amenities. Vallavaraayan (Napoleon) is his arch enemy. Their enmity is further sharpened when Vaanavaraayan wins the hand of Vaitheeswari (Meena), whom Vallavaraayan had also wished to wed. So Vallavaraayan convinces the priest at the temple to mix a poison in the holy water that Vaitheeswari drinks. As a result she becomes incapable of conceiving. But surprisingly, Vaitheeswari soon becomes pregnant-though she has pretended with the help of the mid-wife (S. N. Lakshmi), to do so to uphold her husband's honor. She takes poison and kills herself unable to bear the grief of being incapable of giving her husband a child and on her deathbed makes Vaanavarayan swear to take Ponni (Aishwariya) as his wife. Vaanavarayan however refuses until Ponni agrees to marry Sembattai (Thalapathi Dinesh)- Vallavarayan's hechman-who abandons her to Vallavarayan's vice. Infuriated Vaanavarayam attacks Vallavarayam and spares his life after giving him a sermon on how to win the heart of people.

The story begins with a group of government officers who come to list the number of devastated houses. The officers promised them to give a big amount to build their house but in exchange for a little amount to register their name. So the illiterate villagers, who wants to make easy money, demolish their house. The officers turn out to be frauds. The village panchayat president (Vinu Chakravarthy) knows that the villagers will not interfere in his decision until they are uneducated. Sivaraman, a new school teacher, tries to change their custom and the children are happy to learn at school. Soon, Sivaraman has trouble with the village head.

What transpires later forms the crux of the story.

The story begins with the minister Deivanayagam (R. P. Viswam) and his son who debated. Deivanayagam's son came with his wife Malathi (Rekha) and new-born daughter Devi, he believed that his father changed. On the other hand, Deivanayagam wanted his son back, leaving his wife and daughter but his son refused. Meanwhile, Deivanayagam's assistant Arumugam (K. Muthukaalai (Murali), an angry young man, returns to his village after studying in the city. Ambalam (R. P. Viswam) is a respected panchayat headman, since his brother got married with another caste woman, he hates their family. Poochandu (Saradha Preetha), Ambalam's niece, falls in love with Muthukaalai. In the meantime, Muthukaalai's cousin Marikolunthu (Revathi) who is crazy about Muthukaalai comes from her village to marry him. One day, the storm devastates the entire village, destroying the poor villagers' house. The villagers begg Ambalam to let them in the temple until the storm calms down but Ambalam refuses point blank. Poochandu's mother breaks the temple's padlock to save the villagers. The next day, at the village panchayat, Ambalam condemn Poochandu's mother to tonsure and Poochandu to become a Devadasi. In anger against this dictatorship, Muthukaalai ridicules Ambalam and he get married with Poochandu. What transpires next forms the rest of the story.
