Chandrashekhar (Shammi Kapoor), or Shekhar as he is called now, belongs to an aristocratic family, who believe laughter is a sign of belonging to the lower class, and as a result laughter is not encouraged in the household, run by Shekhar's domineering mother (Lalita Pawar). In this household the only one who dares to laugh and enjoy life is Shekhar's sister Mala (Shashikala), who also dares to love Jeevan (Anoop Kumar). Things change when their mother finds out about Mala's indiscretions, and asks Shekhar to take her away from their home, to distant and scenic Kashmir, for a while. She instructs Shekhar to get married to a girl from a princely family. When Shekhar and Mala go to Kashmir, they meet with beautiful Rajkumari (Saira Banu). And after being stranded with her for a few nights during a snowstorm, he realizes what he has been missing, and becomes a care-free man in love. This change is welcomed by Mala, but not by their mother. To make matters worse, Rajkumari does not belong to a princely family, and Shekhar knows that his mother will never approve of his marrying her.

A woman named Asha lives in a hostel where she gets tortured by nightmares. Later on she goes to Dr. Vijay (her lover) for treatment. She leaves the hostel after she realises that neither the hostel authorities nor her friends from hostel are happy due to her behaviour. Her dreams are of her insane aunt who tries to strangle her. Her aunt killed her mother years ago in their ancestral mansion. After understanding her case, Dr. Vijay decides to take her far away from the city to her ancestral mansion, where she spent her childhood. Shobha, a close friend of Asha, also decides to accompany Asha to the mansion. In the big old mansion, Asha witnesses lots of things which make her more scared. Vijay does not agree with her. Later Ashok, a cousin of Asha, comes to India to meet her. Later, on the eve of Asha's birthday, Ashok's wife gets murdered.

Inder Saxena is a building contractor from Delhi with an attitude that money is the foremost thing in the world. His maternal uncle persuades a reluctant Inder to visit and supervise a project's progress at Pratapgadh. Once there, he meets his college mate Prakash (Vinod Mehra), his professor Daya Shankar Sharma (Shreeram Lagoo) and his daughter Rama (Raakhee). Inder sets his eyes on Rama but Prakash, secretly admiring Rama, tells Inder (Amitabh Bachchan) that she is the kind of girl who can't be lured with the power of money. But, Inder has firm perception that women want only money, bets Prakash that he will lure Rama with his money. After each of his bag of tricks fail, he publishes a book of her poems and gifts it to her. This gesture surprises Rama and is very delighted. One day Inder asks Rama to accompany him. Rama promises him and lies to her father about seeing off Laila (Farida Jalal). Upon learning the truth, Daya Shankar unexpectedly drops in with Prakash at Inder's house, finds Rama in his bedroom and scorns her for lying. Rama leaves the house forever and while heading towards Delhi, is robbed for which she has to get down the train. Distressed Rama gets the help of Station Master Nandalal (Asrani), who shelters her in his house. Coincidentally, the same train meets with an accident. Assuming an unrecognizable damaged body to be Rama, the police sends a letter to Daya Shankar about her death, shocking everyone. Inder, feeling guilty for the incident, believes that Rama is alive and searches for her. Meanwhile, Rama learns singing to forget her sorrows and becomes a renowned singer. One day Inder hears her singing on radio, finds her out and informs Prakash. Eventually with all misunderstandings and differences settled, Rama and Inder come together.

Haridas Choudhry lives a wealthy lifestyle in Mumbai, India, along with his wife, Sonu, son, Guddu, and sister, Geeta. He had started his career as a lowly cobbler on a corner of a busy street, but is now the owner of a shoe company. His associates want him to make shoes that wear out soon, but he refuses to do so, and would like to buy out National Shoes for 20 Lakh Rupees. He withdraws the money, but before he could undertake the transaction, Guddu gets kidnapped, and the demand from his abductors is for 20 Lakhs. Much to his relief he finds out that his servant's son, Bansi, has been mistakenly abducted in place of his son. Nevertheless he decides to pay the ransom, this time with the help of Inspector Amarnath Gill, his sister's estranged boyfriend, who he had turned down as he was not wealthy enough. The money is turned over to the kidnappers, two associates, Manmohan and Preeti, are arrested, Bansi is found and returned to his dad. But the money and the real abductor, Raj Singh, is still at large - and as long as he remains at large none of them can really be safe for he has a grudge to settle against Haridas, and the missing 20 Lakhs may result in the bankruptcy of Haridas' company, they may have to forfeit their family home, and Haridas may well face a jail sentence for embezzling this amount for personal gain. But Inspector catches the thief and returns the money in the end.

Raj Kumar is an honest, handsome and intelligent young man. He works as a sole trader and being a painter trade, he is unable to earn a living and unable to pay rent to his kind-hearted but talkative landlady Mrs. D'sa. One day Raj finds a wallet containing money and returns it to the owner Mr Ramnath. Ramnath admires Raj and pleased with his honesty, employs him to work in his office as a clerk. Raj meets with Ramnath's maidservant Asha and soon both fall in love. This all ends when Raj finds out that Asha is really Aarti, the niece of his employer. Unfortunately, his landlady dies consuming medicine manufactured by his employer Mr Ramnath and she passes away suddenly leaving Raj Kumar alone. The police conducts a post-mortem and as a result find out that Mrs. D'sa was poisoned. Raj became the prime suspect and is subsequently taken for questioning and is arrested and held in a cell. In the trial that he faces, however, Ramnath reveals the truth and thus Raj is saved.
