With the exception of the opening and final scenes, which depict the 1941 suicide by drowning of Virginia Woolf in the River Ouse, the action takes place within the span of a single day in three different years and alternates between them throughout the film. In 1923, Virginia has begun writing the book Mrs Dalloway in her home in the town of Richmond outside London. In 1951, troubled Los Angeles housewife Laura Brown escapes from her conventional life by reading Mrs Dalloway. In 2001, New Yorker Clarissa Vaughan is the embodiment of the novel's title character, as she spends the day preparing for a party she is hosting in honor of her former lover and friend Richard, a poet and author living with AIDS who is to receive a major literary award. Richard tells Clarissa he has stayed alive for her sake, and the award is meaningless because he didn't get it sooner, until he was on the brink of death. She tells him she believes he would have won the award regardless of his illness. Richard often refers to Clarissa as "Mrs. Dalloway" - her namesake - because she distracts herself from her own life the way the Woolf character does., 1h55

Following a car accident, Paul Wagner suffers a head injury he is struggling to recover fully and can not manage his business of trading of champagne. Christine Belling takes advantage of the situation to try to sell the company, which Paul refuses to accept. Murders are committed: it is likely that Paul is the culprit. He then approaches Christine for her support. But she uses the situation to make Paul agree to the sale. Paul is the prime suspect in the eyes of investigators (who never actually make an appearance), due to brain damage suffered in an earlier accident and assault. Jacqueline, Christine Belling's secretary, is at the heart of this case, observing everything. Jacqueline is related to Christopher, husband of Christine. The dénouement is slightly Hitchcok-like, but the film's humour is meaner, and the view of humanity it fosters is bleaker., 1h37

At the end of her career the sculptor Camille Claudel seems to suffer with mental issues. Consequently her younger brother Paul sends her to an asylum in the outskirts of Avignon. Claudel tries to convince her doctor she is perfectly sane, while living among patients who obviously are not. She is desperate to see her brother again, hoping he might eventually support her plea., 1h47

As a relative newcomer to an Oregon town that bears his name, Dr. Mumford (Loren Dean) seems charming and skillful to his neighbors and patients. His unique, frank approach to psychotherapy soon attracts patients away from the two therapists (David Paymer and Jane Adams) already working in the area.
