Ivan Pavlov (Russian:Akademik Ivan Pavlov) is a 1949 Soviet historical biographical film directed by Grigori Roshal and starring Aleksandr Borisov, Nina Alisova and Nikolai Plotnikov. The film portrays the life of the Russian scientist Ivan Pavlov (1849-1936), known for his Pavlov's dog experiments. The film was made during the Stalinist era, despite the fact that Pavlov had been a noted opponent of the Soviet regime.

Andrei Bolkonsky In St. Petersburg of 1805, Pierre Bezukhov, the illegitimate son of a rich nobleman, is introduced to high society. As Pierre's father recognizes him, he attracts the attention of Hélène Kuragin and marries her, only to discover she is unfaithful to him. Bolkonsky takes part in the failed campaign in Austria, where he witnesses the Battle of Schöngrabern and the Battle of Austerlitz. The prince is badly wounded and is mistaken for dead. His wife dies at childbirth. Bolkonsky returns to his home and meets Natasha Rostova, the young daughter of a count.

Two young physicists, an afflicted experimenter Dmitri Gusev (Batalov) and a sceptical physicist-theorist Ilya Kulikov (Smoktunovsky) carry out nuclear researches at a Siberian research institute. Dmitri heads the researches begun by his teacher Sintsov who as a result of experiment had received a deadly dose of radiation. Gusev is irradiated also. Doctors warn that any more radiation will kill him. At that time his friend Ilya and Lyolya who loved Dmitri developed a romantic relationship. The enamoured couple prepares for a wedding and look for a possibility to inform Dmitri about it. When they meet, Dmitri already suspects this and coldly received Lyolya and Ilya. Lyolya is caught up in self-contradictions, and as she tries to establish his true feelings for her she learns about the terrible diagnosis. Realising that she still loves Dmitri, Lyolya cancels her wedding to Kulikov and weds Gusev.

Le film de Youli Karassik reprend les principales lignes de l'œuvre de Tchekhov. L'action se déroule au bord d'un lac dans la propriété de Sorine : ses convives s'apprêtent à assister à la représentation d'une pièce écrite par son neveu, Treplev. L'interprète principale, c'est Nina Zaretchnaïa, dont est éperdument amoureux Treplev. Parmi les invités, des personnalités célèbres comme la mère de Treplev, l'actrice Irina Arkadina, et l'écrivain Boris Trigorine, tous deux amants… Pour Nina comme pour Treplev le spectacle revêt une importance considérable, car, tous deux, rêvent d'une belle carrière. Mais, les spectateurs sont distraits, et Arkadina parle, à voix basse, de décadence. Blessé dans son orgueil, Treplev interrompt la représentation… Ensuite, Treplev, se sentant humilié et déconsidéré, dépose une mouette qu'il vient d'abattre aux pieds de Nina et lui annonce : « Je me tuerai de la même façon. » (Acte II) Plus tard, l'écrivain Trigorine, serrant son carnet, séduit Nina et confesse à la jeune femme : « Un sujet me vient à l'esprit... celui d'un petit conte : au bord d'un lac vit depuis son enfance une jeune fille... telle que vous. Elle aime ce lac comme une mouette, comme une mouette elle est heureuse et libre. Mais un homme arrive, par hasard, et, par désœuvrement, la fait périr, comme on a fait périr cette mouette. » C'est, peu après, la séparation, les adieux, en oubliant les discordes avec le gérant. Deux ans plus tard, on se retrouve dans la même demeure. Treplev habite encore là. Celui-ci est, à présent, un écrivain reconnu.
