Synopsis
The story follows the life of Robert Herne, who works in a coal mine, and his friendship with Maria Obal. While working in the mine, he encounters an inhabitant of the planet Algol who gives him a prototype machine which can provide a virtually unlimited source of power. Over the next year Herne sets up a factory providing energy; however, instead of simply relieving workers of the difficult job of mining, the device creates massive economic upheaval throughout the world.Actors

The Hess family lives on an isolated farm in Doylestown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Graham Hess (Mel Gibson) is a former priest whose wife, Colleen, died in a horrific traffic accident caused by a town local, Ray Reddy (Shyamalan). No longer practicing religiously, Graham lives with his asthmatic son, Morgan (Rory Culkin), daughter Bo (Abigail Breslin), who leaves water glasses all over the house because of various reasons, and Graham's younger brother, Merrill (Joaquin Phoenix), a former minor league baseball star who never made it to the major leagues because he swung too hard and struck out too often. Graham discovers a huge crop circle in his field, reports of violent animal behavior have spread across town, and one of the Hess' dogs tries to attack Bo and Morgan, forcing them to kill it.

Fifty people suddenly wake up in a darkened room, arranged in two concentric circles around a strange device. Noises sound when they attempt to move or touch the others. When someone ignores the warning and leaves formation, a beam from the device kills him. As the others panic, a man attempts to calm them. In mid-sentence, he is killed by the device. Thereafter, every two minutes, a sound signals that another person will be killed. After several people die, they realize they can vote for who dies. When nobody votes, one is selected randomly.

In the year 2285, Admiral James T. Kirk oversees a simulator session of Captain Spock's trainees. In the simulation, Lieutenant Saavik commands the starship USS Enterprise on a rescue mission to save the crew of a damaged ship. When the Enterprise enters the Klingon Neutral Zone to reach the ship it is attacked by Klingon cruisers and critically damaged. The simulation is named the "Kobayashi Maru"—a no-win scenario designed to test the character of Starfleet officers. After a volcanic eruption on Daikoku Island, the Yahata-Maru Japanese fishing vessel is caught in strong currents off its shores. As the boat drifts into shore, the island begins to erupt, and a giant monster lifts itself out of the volcano. A few days later, reporter Goro Maki is sailing in the area and finds the vessel intact but deserted. As he explores the vessel, he finds all the crew dead except for one young man called Hiroshi Okamura, who has been badly wounded. Suddenly a giant Shockirus sea louse attacks him but he is saved by Maki who kills it with a cleaver.

Launched in 1977, the Voyager 2 space probe carried a gold phonographic disk with a message of peace, inviting alien civilizations to visit Earth. The probe is intercepted by an alien ship which then sends a small scout vessel to establish first contact with Earth. However, instead of greeting the alien craft, the US government shoots it down. Crashing in Chequamegon Bay, Wisconsin, the lone alien occupant, looking like a floating ball of glowing energy, finds the home of recently widowed Jenny Hayden (Karen Allen). While there, the alien uses a lock of hair from her deceased husband, Scott, to clone a new body for himself as a terrified Jenny watches. The alien "Starman" (Jeff Bridges) has seven small silver spheres with him which provide energy to perform miraculous feats. He uses the first to send a message to his people stating that Earth is hostile and his spacecraft has been destroyed. He arranges to rendezvous with them in three days time. He then uses the second sphere to create a holographic map of the United States, coercing Jenny into taking him to the rendezvous point in Arizona.
