The miniseries is based on the Australian historical novel by Nancy Cato, first published in 1958. The film is marketed with the tagline A sweeping saga of one woman's struggle for survival.
The first series comprises 4 two-hour episodes first broadcast in October 1983, the second series comprises 2 two-hour episodes first broadcast on 18 March 1990. In the US, the miniseries was shown on the premium channel, HBO premiering on 15 January 1984.

When Jim Craig and his father Henry are discussing their finances, a herd of wild horses called the Brumby Mob passes by, and Henry wants to shoot the black stallion leader—but Jim convinces his father to capture and sell them. One morning, Zeus, a dog, goes to the pier, spots a dolphin, and becomes fascinated by its movements. Afterwards, he returns home to his owner Terry Barnett, an aspiring musician, and Terry's son Jordan, who appears to be taking care of his inept father. Bastian Bux (Jonathan Brandis) is having troubles at home: his father Barney's (John Wesley Shipp) busy workload is keeping him from consoling Bastian's fear of heights. As such, he then heads to an old bookstore where he again meets Mr. Koreander (Thomas Hill), who proceeds to help find a book on courage. In 1962 Toni Whitney (Tina Majorino), a nine-year-old girl, and her Rockport, Maine family adopt an orphaned baby seal, naming it Andre. Andre is manageable when he is young but as Andre gets older and starts getting into mischief, he antagonizes some of the local fishermen. Toni forms an inseparable bond with Andre, but their relationship becomes threatened when the fishermen do not want to deal with Andre's antics any longer.
