In Orlando, Florida, Quentin "Q" Jacobsen (Nat Wolff) lives next door to his childhood friend Margo Roth Spiegelman (Cara Delevingne). Quentin has been fascinated with Margo ever since she moved in across the street. As young children, Quentin and Margo one day discover the corpse of a man who has committed suicide. The film begins with Tionne Watkins (Drew Sidora) narrating, telling about the girls' lives as children and summarizing their story. The film then jumps to the year 1990 in Atlanta, Georgia. Tionne is approached by her friend, Marie, who informs her about a girl group being formed by Ian Burke and persuades her to audition for LaFace Records. Tionne brings Crystal (Brooke Montalvo), the founder of the group, to see Lisa Lopes (Lil Mama) perform and Crystal says that she will be perfect for the group. After singing "Meeting in the Ladies Room", they received a mixed reception. (most in part due to Crystal's ill-fated off key performance) However, both Tionne and Lisa garner interest from both Perri "Pebbles" Reid (Rochelle Aytes) and her husband, co-founder of LaFace L.A. Reid (Carl Anthony Payne II). After receiving the good news from both Pebbles and L.A. Reid, Lisa decides that she should call her family and tell them the great news, especially her father, who told her that she would never make it as a rapper. She calls her family only to learn that her father was shot and killed.

After moving from Michigan to Florida, Aileen Wuornos, a prostitute, meets Selby Wall in a gay bar. After initial hostility and declaring that she is not gay, Aileen talks to Selby over beers. Four retired mobsters (Richard Dreyfuss, Burt Reynolds, Dan Hedaya and Seymour Cassel) plan one last crime to save their apartment at a retirement home (the owners are forcing them out with a rent increase so that the apartments can be rented to young, affluent South Beach couples). The four steal a corpse from the mortuary to use as the "victim" in a staged murder scene. Unknown to them, the body belonged to the head of a Colombian drug smuggling ring. As a result of the "murder", many of the young renters leave and the four men are given cash and a rent discount by the complex to keep living there. Much of this money is spent on high living and women, which causes a young woman (Jennifer Tilly) to discover that the four men staged the murder - while spending time with the normally-silent "Mouth," he reveals that his mouth is loosened by intimacy with women.

The film examines the mind of anthropologist Ethan Powell (Hopkins) who has been missing for a few years, living in the jungle with gorillas. He had been convicted of killing and injuring several supposed Wilderness Park Rangers in Africa, and is sent to prison. A bright young psychiatrist (Gooding) tries to find out why he killed them, but becomes entangled in a quest to learn the true history and nature of humankind. Eventually it is revealed that during the course of his stay with the gorillas, the animals accepted Powell as part of their group and that he was attempting to protect his gorilla family when the rangers arrived and started shooting them. He gets a hearing to reveal the truth, but an attack by a vicious guard causes Powell to stop talking again. At the end of the film, Powell escapes from prison, using a pen to dig out the lock on a window and heads back to Africa.
