Aloma of the South Seas is a 1926 silent film starring Gilda Gray as an erotic dancer, filmed in Puerto Rico and Bermuda, and based on a 1925 play of the same title by John B. Hymer and LeRoy Clemens. Grossing $3 million in the U.S. alone, this was the most successful film of 1926 and the fourth most successful film of the 1920s.

Synopsis

Aloma, une danseuse, vit sur Paradise Island, surveillée jalousement par son amant Nuitane. Lorsque Red Malloy lui cherche des ennuis, Bob Holden, un Américain présent sur l'île pour oublier une histoire d'amour malheureuse, la défend et gagne sa confiance. Sylvia, l'ancien amour de Bob, arrive sur l'île avec son mari Van Templeton. Aloma commençait à tomber amoureuse de Bob, mais celui-ci réalise qu'il aime encore Sylvia. Bob et Van disparaissent avec leur canoë pendant une tempête, ce qui fait se rapprocher les deux femmes. Mais Bob réapparaît, annonçant que Van s'est noyé. Il se réconcilie avec Sylvia et Aloma retourne avec Nuitane.

The film is a comedy that centers on a disgruntled 18th century Bostonian, played by Errol, who while wishing that he was a pirate, dons the clothes and play-acts the part. He is mistaken for the real pirate, Dixie Bull (played by Walter Law) whom Errol, of course, bumps into later in the film. More importantly, Errol "slays" the villain and puts his foot upon the pirate's head. This is more than enough and he heads back home to his unappreciated wife, played by Dorothy Gish.

On a volcanic island near the kingdom of Hetvia rules Count Dakkar, a benevolent leader and scientist who has eliminated class distinction among the island's inhabitants. In the waning days of World War II, the United States Navy cargo ship Reluctant and her crew are stationed in the "backwater" areas of the Pacific Ocean. The executive officer/cargo chief, Lieutenant Junior Grade Douglas A. "Doug" Roberts (Henry Fonda), tries to shield the dispirited crew from the harsh and unpopular captain, Lieutenant Commander Morton (James Cagney). Eager to join the fighting, Roberts repeatedly requests a transfer. Morton is forced by regulation to forward his requests, but refuses to endorse them, which means they are always rejected. Roberts shares quarters with Ensign Frank Thurlowe Pulver (Jack Lemmon). Pulver spends most of his time idling in his bunk and avoids the captain at all costs, so much so that Morton is actually unaware that the ensign is even part of the crew.

While in Paris, both are scandalised by the Folies Bergère.

As described in a film magazine, Captain Harry English (Standing) is reported to have been killed during a battle between factions in India and his wife Rosamond (Ferguson) remarries. As time passes Rosamond finds that her love for her deceased husband is greater than her love for the older man that she has married, Sir Arthur Gerardine (Handyside). She goes to live at Harry's old house and there breaks down and tells her husband the truth. She becomes ill and in her ravings asks for Harry. Harry, who was not killed, learns that his wife has remarried and, disguised as an Indian, becomes secretary to Rosamond's husband. He comes to her at a peak psychological moment and, after the shock wears off, they are reunited.
