It is an adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's play An Enemy of the People, and was released under that title in the UK. The cast includes Ray's favourite actor Soumitra Chatterjee, and veteran actors such as Dhritiman Chatterjee, Shubhendu Chatterjee, Manoj Mitra and Ruma Guhathakurta. Ray adapts the play to an Indian setting: a flourishing township in which a temple attracts devotees as well as tourists. When a health problem is discovered Dr Ashok Gupta, played by Soumitra Chatterjee, finds his popularity flagging.
The film was screened out of competition at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival.
Synopsis
Un ennemi du peuple est une adaptation de la pièce d'Ibsen du même nom. Le docteur Ashoke Gupta (Soumitra Chatterjee) s’aperçoit que les cas de jaunisse sont en augmentation dans sa ville de Chandipur. Il fait faire des analyses, qui montrent que la maladie se répand par l’eau bénite distribuée dans le temple de la ville. Or le temple fait venir de nombreux pèlerins à Chandipur et est au cœur de l’économie de la ville. Le fondateur du temple ne veut pas admettre que de l’eau sacrée puisse contenir des bactéries dangereuses. Lorsque le docteur Gupta décide de publier ses découvertes dans le journal local, le maire de la ville, qui n’est autre que son propre frère, s'y oppose puis cherche à le discréditer en mettant en avant le fait qu’il n’est pas un hindou pratiquant.Actors

Anila Bose (Mamata Shankar) receives a letter from a man, who claims to be her long lost uncle Manomohan Mitra (Utpal Dutt). Soumitra Chatterjee plays Narsingh, a taxi driver. Narsingh is a proud and hot-tempered Rajput with a passion for his car, a vintage 1930 Chrysler and his Rajput heritage. Being a descendent of a royal Rajput family, his self-esteem is reflected through his inability to accept insult and defeat, as a result of which he even takes part in a small race with his car. He does not want to be the one who falls behind and develops a strong hatred for women and mankind in general. As a result of reckless driving, while overtaking the car which carried the district inspector, his licence is taken from him. The film tells the story of a lonely housewife, known as Charu (Madhabi Mukherjee), who lives a wealthy, secluded and idle life in 1870's Calcutta. Amal is unwilling to betray his cousin's trust that has already suffered at the hands of Charu's swindling brother, Umapada. He abruptly leaves, and after Charu hysterically submits to her disappointment in the presence of Bhupati, there is nothing left but for the forsaken woman and her humiliated husband to forge a contrived reconciliation.
