Synopsis
Anna Karénine, une jeune femme mariée de la haute société russe du XIX siècle, est amoureuse de Vronski, un jeune homme séducteur et fat. Elle prend la fuite avec lui, abandonnant ses enfants et son mari, ennuyeux et important. Les gens du monde se détournent d'Anna qui a de plus en plus de mal à retenir son amant. Former college classmates Martha Dobie (Shirley MacLaine) and Karen Wright (Audrey Hepburn) open a private school for girls. Martha's Aunt Lily (Miriam Hopkins), an aging actress, lives and teaches elocution at the school. After an engagement of two years to Joe Cardin (James Garner), a reputable obstetrician, Karen finally agrees to set a wedding date. Joe is related to the influential Amelia Tilford (Fay Bainter), whose granddaughter Mary (Karen Balkin) is a student at the school. Young, beautiful and intelligent Maya (Deepa Sahi) lives with her father in a palatial mansion in rural India. When her father suffers stroke, she calls for local Dr.Charu Das, who arrives on his bicycle and prescribes treatment for her father. He comes pretty often, more on the pretext of seeing her than her father. Eventually they get married. Years pass by and Charu is busy engrossed in treating patients, leaving Maya alone to ponder her own fate and life. A 50-year-old business man Léopold (Bernard Giraudeau) arrives home with 20-year-old Franz (Malik Zidi), whom he has just met. Franz is not quite sure why he agreed to come home with Léopold as he is supposed to be meeting his fiancée Anna, but he accepts drinks from Léopold and they begin to get to know each other. Franz tells Léopold that he is not sure whether or not he loves Anna, that he does not really enjoy sex with her, finding more pleasure in books, theatre and life in general. Léopold asks him if he has ever slept with a man. Franz says he has not, but describes a dream where a man comes into his bedroom in an overcoat and has sex with him. Léopold says that although he once lived with a woman for seven years, he has always found sex with men more exciting. They kiss, and Léopold tells Franz to get undressed and into bed. He then appears beside the bed in an overcoat ready to re-enact Franz's dream.

The story follows Yū Honda (Takahiro Nishijima), a young teenage Catholic attempting to live his life in a faithful and orderly manner. His father, Tetsu, has become a devout Catholic priest following the death of Yū's mother, and operates his own church. Yū's father asks Yū to confess his sins, but Yū believes he is a good person, who has little to confess. Marina est une prostituée dont la vie est assez difficile. Son beau-père est arrêté par la Gestapo, sa mère trompe son mari et elle-même tombe sous le charme de son demi-frère. Par la suite elle assiste à l'assassinat de sa meilleure amie. Elle tombe alors amoureuse d'un peintre qui, malheureusement, est gravement malade : il a une tumeur au cerveau. Pour financer les frais de l'opération, Marina se voit contrainte de reprendre son ancien « travail ». Les deux amoureux partent alors pour l'Italie, où ils trouvent de quoi se divertir et se détendre. Finalement l'opération a lieu mais n'apportera pas de guérison définitive. Ils retournent en Autriche et passent quelques jours à Vienne. Marine aidera ensuite son ami, devenu aveugle, à mourir à l'aide de somnifères, car ses souffrances sont telles qu'il ne peut plus les supporter. Après cela, elle se suicide à son tour.

After Zia commits suicide, he finds himself in an afterlife limbo much the same as life, just slightly worse. Here the color is dim, there are no stars, and no one can smile. This strange realm is populated by people who have committed suicide, such as Eugene, a Russian musician who lives with his mother, father, and brother – all suicide victims. Eugene kills himself on stage by pouring a beer he is drinking onto his electric guitar. Together they waste most of their afterlives in bars, until Zia learns from a friend, Brian, that his ex-girlfriend, Desiree, has also committed suicide. He and Eugene take to the road to find her, in Eugene's rundown car. Early on, it is revealed that Eugene's car has two idiosyncrasies: a sort of black hole underneath the passenger seat where items that are dropped disappear forever and broken headlights that cannot be fixed by the most adept of mechanics. On their trip, they pick up hitchhiker Mikal, who insists there has been a mistake, and she is seeking the "people in charge" (a.k.a. the PIC) in order to be sent back.
