The three films focus on the travels of the kindly yakuza boss Kunisada Chūji. The existing print begins with Chuji on the road, fleeing the law while taking care of Kantaro, the son of a dead friend. He leaves Kantaro with Kabe Yasuemon, an honorable local boss, but is shocked to find out that his own men have been committing robberies using his own name. Angry, Chuji hits the road and eventually settles in another town, assuming another name and working as a clerk for a sake brewery. Okuma, the daughter of the brewer, falls in love with Chuji, but he ignores her. When he saves her brother from trouble with the Otozo gang, his identity is revealed and the police close in. Okume kills herself and Chuji flees, but the palsy he had been suffering from worsens and he is finally caught. His henchmen, however, succeed in rescuing him and bring him back to his home village. Unable to walk and confined to bed, Chuji is hidden in a storehouse. His woman, Oshina, discovers that one of his men has betrayed him, but it is too late. Despite the valiant efforts of his men to hold off the police, Chuji is finally arrested by the authorities.

The film begins in 1933. Students at Kyoto Imperial University protest against the Japanese invasion of Manchuria. Prominent professor Yagihara (Denjiro Okochi) is relieved of his post because of his leftist views against fascism. The professor's daughter Yukie (Setsuko Hara) is courted by two of her father's students: Ryukichi Noge (Susumu Fujita) and Itokawa (Akitake Kôno). Itokawa is safe and sensible while Noge is fiery. Yukie is eventually drawn toward Noge.

In 1185, the Heike family fights against the Minamoto family. After a bloody naval battle in the Pacific Ocean, Yoshitsune Minamoto defeats the enemy and the survivors commit suicide. When the triumphant Yoshitsune arrives in Kyoto, his brother, the Shogun Yoritomo, is uneasy and orders his men to arrest Yoshitsune. However, Yoshitsune escapes with six loyal samurai led by Benkei and they head to the country of his only friend Hidehira Fujiwara. Near the border, after crossing the forest disguised as monks, their porter discovers that they are Yoshitsune and the six samurais and advises that the fearful Kajiwara and his soldiers are waiting for them in the border to arrest them. Yoshitsune disguises as a porter and at the barrier at the border, Benkei has to convince Kajiwara that they are six monks traveling to collect donation to build a large temple in Kyoto.

Japon, été 1936. Yoshikazu Tomoda et Tadaaki Tachibana sont tous les deux originaires du même village. Dès lors, Yoshikazu Tomoda suit un long et éprouvant entrainement pour devenir pilote et se forger le caractère. Après plusieurs années d'efforts et d'abnégation, Yoshikazu est devenu un pilote confirmé. À l’automne 1941, il embarque à bord du Akagi, navire de la flotte qui prend une direction inconnue. Quelques jours plus tard, l'équipage réuni sur le pont du bateau et lecture lui est donné de l'objectif de la mission : la flotte se dirige en direction d'Hawaï afin de couler la flotte américaine du Pacifique. Le 7 décembre 1941, il s'envole du porte-avions lors de l'attaque surprise de Pearl Harbor. De son côté, Tadaaki, lui aussi pilote, participe au large de la côte est de la Malaisie à l'attaque qui voit le cuirassé britannique HMS Prince of Wales et le croiseur de bataille HMS Repulse coulés par les bombardiers japonais.

On July 26, 1942 the American Marine invasion task force is sailing towards Guadalcanal. The Marines land on Guadalcanal with no initial opposition. They find an abandoned village and capture an airfield, which the Americans work to complete. Based on a tip from a Japanese deserter, the Marines leave by boat for the village of Matanikau, where there are supposedly a large number of Japanese troops who want to surrender. On the way one boat is destroyed by a Japanese sub before it is sunk by onshore Marine artillery. The Marines walk into a trap and they are all killed except for Private Soose Alvarez who makes it back to the American lines. The Marines then march on Matanikau in force and on the way, Private “Chicken’ Anderson is wounded by a Japanese soldier who only pretended to be dead. The Marines enjoy mail call, but suffer through Japanese air force bombing raids. Army troops land to support the Marines. They launch a campaign to root Japanese troops out of a series of caves. They try to listen to the results of the game two of the 1942 World Series, but static unfortunately prevents them from hearing the final score. The Marines are both shelled by the Japanese navy and bombed by their air force. A force of Marine fighter planes land on the island. All the marines write letters home. They launch an attack on the Japanese, during which Pvt. Alvarez is killed. The marines are relieved and evacuated from the island.
