Answered by Fire is a two-part television film based on the 1999 East Timor conflicts that led to East Timor's independence. The film is based on "Dancing with the Devil, A personal Account of Policing the East Timor Vote for Independence", which was written by David Savage, an Australian Federal Police Officer, who was based in Maliana during the vote, and where the fictional "Nunura " is based, and who returned to East Timor to lead investigations into the Crimes Against Humanity committed there. The book is Published by Monash University Asia Institute, Melbourne. David Savage was a technical and script consultant during the filming, and played a minor role. It stars David Wenham, Isabelle Blais, and Alex Tilman. It is a co-production between ABC in Australia and CBC in Canada, and was shown in Portugal on RTP as Timor: A Ferro e Fogo (literally "Timor: By Iron and Fire") with Portuguese subtitles. It has also been shown on the Australia Network, which is available in Indonesia via satellite and cable, as well as other countries in Asia and the Pacific, and ION Television in the United States. It was released on DVD in Brazil as Resposta à Bala (literally "Answered by the Bullet") with a dubbed soundtrack in Portuguese.

The film was filmed in areas of Queensland, Australia. Many of the extras and some of the minor characters were East Timorese locals, who had been living in the regions affected by violence during the crisis. Some found themselves disoriented by the accuracy of the sets and locations for their resemblance to areas of East Timor.

The film won two awards from Australian Film Institute (AFI).

Following the death of her husband, 10-year-old Paul's mother Mel (Parker) comes to rely on an old friend, Lenny (Wenham), who is also a pimp and drug dealer. In outer space, a United States-owned satellite blows up and one of the last remaining pieces, a beacon, is sent hurdling towards Earth where it lands in Australia, only to be swallowed by a crocodile. Josh and Cin meet at a party in Sydney three days before he is due to return to London. Originally planning just to spend the night, Josh decides to stay at her flat until he has to leave for the airport. The two gradually grow closer, feeling a strong connection. Barry Wirth (Sam Worthington) is a retired small time criminal who is released on parole following the death of his mother, so that he can care for his younger brother, Joey (Luke Pegler). Wirth was falsely convicted for murder by corrupt police detective Arnie DeViers (David Field), who is in the employ of criminal kingpin Chicka Martin (Gary Sweet). Shortly after Wirth is released, a corrupt accountant is arrested and his records seized, causing difficulties for Wirth's new employer, Darren "Dabba" Barrington (Timothy Spall), an ex criminal turned restauranteur whose money is seized along with that of Chicka. Wirth's friend Johnny "Spit" Spitieri (David Wenham), a heroin addict and small time criminal, is arrested while conducting a drug deal and finds himself owing twenty thousand dollars to Chicka. DeViers continues to harass and threaten Wirth, even as the latter finds success as a chef in Dabba's restaurant. Despite his best efforts to remain clean, Wirth finds himself under increasing pressure to return to his criminal ways in order to help both Dabba and Spit.
