Apna Desh (Our Country) is a 1972 Hindi movie. Produced by T.M. Kittu and A. V. Subramaniam and directed by Jambu. The film stars Rajesh Khanna, Mumtaz, Om Prakash, Jagdeep, Mukkamala, Madan Puri and the uncredited Roja Ramani, who plays Rajesh Khanna's niece Sharda. The films music is by R. D. Burman.

The film is a remake of 1969 Telugu hit movie Kathanayakudu (The hero) starring N.T.Ramarao and Jayalalithaa in lead roles. That was even remade into tamil as Nam Naadu (Our Country) starring M.G.R and Jayalalithaa in the lead roles. Actress Sridevi has enacted in a role as child nephew of lead protagonist.

Synopsis

Akash is an honest and educated young man, employed by the Bombay Municipal Corporation as a clerk. He lives with his equally honest brother, his sister-in-law, a niece, Sharda, and a nephew. Due to Akash's honesty he becomes a liability to his corrupt superiors. One day they find fault with his work, and dismiss him. When Akash attempts to assert himself legally, he finds that there is corruption everywhere. In retaliation, even his brother is implicated in a crime, and arrested. Now Akash must come up with a way to clear his brother, as well as expose the wrong-doers.

Bhola (Rajesh Khanna) is an innocent band musician who lives with his physically challenged sister Belu in a village. He needs more money for his sister's marriage and he sets off to Bombay to earn. To make his sister not to feel for his departure he sings a song on the way towards railway station. On the other hand Bombay city Police department is shocked by series of diamond thefts which lead no clue. But Inspector Pradhan(Vinod Khanna) suspects the thief to be Ranjith (Rajesh Khanna) who is actually a wealthy diamond businessman on the accounts that whenever a theft occurs he is present there. But he has no evidence and searches for that. He creates a plan with Rita (Mumtaz) to attract Ranjith to know his secret plans. Bhola arrives the city and he is called as Ranjith in a party. Ranjith who arrives the party surprised to see Bhola as he looks identical as him. He immediately plots for a plan. He takes Bhola to his place and reveals himself. He convinces Bhola to act like Ranjith in front of the society as he is suffering from cancer and requires a treatment. Until his return from treatment Bhola has to make believe everybody that he is Ranjith. Actually he makes him as Ranjith so that he can continue with his diamond smuggling meanwhile there will not be any evidence as Bhola is going to be Ranjith everywhere. But he did not reveal the reason to him. He also promises that he would give money for his sister's marriage. Innocent Bhola believes him and agrees to the plan .

Kishan (Rajesh Khanna) is the spoilt son of a rich businessman. He is a medical student, for whom the life is all about playing pranks and troubling people around. Finally he is taught a lesson in humility by fellow student, Madhu (Hema Malini). He undergoes a dramatic change in outlook and falls in love with her. But his joy is short-lived as Kapilkumar (Danny Denzongpa) kills Madhu as she is the only witness to a murder. On the deathbead, Kishan promises Madhu that he would kill whoever is responsible for the death. Kishan is devastated and carries on a man hunt for KapilKumar. He finally recognizes Kapil in a train and in the ensuing scuffle, Kapil pushes Kishan off the running train. When Kishan regains consciousness, he is amazed to see Madhu (Hema Malini). On following her, he realizes that he is the twin sister of Madhu, Chanchal. He then starts practising medicine in their small village as this was what Madhu wanted to do. With time, Both are drawn towards each other until one day Kapil is in front of them once again. What Kishan does not know is that Kapil is his elder brother who was separated when they were young.

Raisaheb Surajbhan Chaudhary lives a wealthy lifestyle in a palatial mansion with his wife of 30 years, Rajlaxmi, and two sons, Rajkumar, who has been married to Shyama for several years; and Mohankumar who is studying in an out f town college. Surajbhan is disappointed with Rajkumar as he has as yet not produced an heir to his family. To make matters worse Mohan, a devout worshiper of Lord Bajrangbali, has taken a vow of celibacy and refuses to get married. Things change dramatically when a young woman named Neena, along with her son, enters the Chaudhary household claiming that Mohan had married and abandoned her. She goes through a number of medical tests which determine that the child is actually an heir of the Chaudhary family. Now Surajbhan and Rajlaxmi want Mohan and Neena to get officially married, much to Mohan's chagrin. Arun meets Seema by accident and both are attracted to each other. But Seema has a questionable background, which do create doubts in the minds of Arun and his mother. Jeevanlal is an Indian man who makes money by stealing. His wife Sita doesn't like her husband doing any criminal activity.Both have a son, Dharamchand and a daughter named Meena. One day Jeevanlal steals from the Tehsildar's home, returns to his home and hides the stolen property with his son.The police arrive at his house and start enquiring the young Dharm about his father. Dharm honestly gives away the stolen properties with him to the policed officers. Jeevan gets arrested and he lands in prison. He begins to start hating his son for putting him into trouble.Years go by and now Dharm has grown up man and he loves his mother a lot. He also has a girl friend named Gauri Malikram, daughter of the village money lender. Gauri was a wild tom boy who after falling in love with Dharm becomes a sensible girl and wishes to get married to him. Dharm now has taken the occupation of farmer and he does well for himself and his family. Even now Jeevanlal still harbours hatred towards his own son. Jeevanlal even visits brothel and gives away the money kept by Dharm for his sister's wedding to a dancer Dharm, an animal lover does not like the cows being sold after they are old and useless. He respects cows and worships them. But Jeevanlal decided one day to sell the cow,which is opposed by Dharmchand. Jeevanlal strikes his son with a stick and to defend himself Dharam picks up another stick. Sita goes and stops the fight and scolds Dharm for disrespecting his father. Sita asks him to get lost and on hearing this Dharm leaves the village and comes for work to Bombay. He gets to work with a building contractor and from whatever he earns send his savings to his mother. After few months, Sita receives a letter that Dharm is coming back to home.Sita feels escalted and on the day he is supposed to reach the village, she decides to receive him in the village bus stand. But on reaching the bus stand she learns from bystanders that Dharm has already left for the house. When Sita reaches home she finds Dharm with an axe and her husband dead. Sita falls in a delimma as she knows Jeevanlal and Dharm never got along with each other but she never expected that Dharm would kill Jeevanlal. Sita still does not believe that Dharm would have killed his father. Dharm gets arrested and his lawyer is Ravi Sharma. It is then that the truth will come out what really transpired between father and son that compelled one to kill the other.
