Synopsis

Ashok comes from a wealthy family, which is run by his dad, and elder brother, Alok. Ashok himself is a slacker, and is only interested in slacking, and playing practical jokes, and no doubt his favorite day is fool's day, 1 April, when he outdoes himself. His jokes befriend him with Madhu, and both fall in love. Then a practical joke hits the truth, and both Ashok and Madhu become targets of an international gang, and must run for their own safety, as well as for the safety of their respective families.

Chandrashekhar (Shammi Kapoor), or Shekhar as he is called now, belongs to an aristocratic family, who believe laughter is a sign of belonging to the lower class, and as a result laughter is not encouraged in the household, run by Shekhar's domineering mother (Lalita Pawar). In this household the only one who dares to laugh and enjoy life is Shekhar's sister Mala (Shashikala), who also dares to love Jeevan (Anoop Kumar). Things change when their mother finds out about Mala's indiscretions, and asks Shekhar to take her away from their home, to distant and scenic Kashmir, for a while. She instructs Shekhar to get married to a girl from a princely family. When Shekhar and Mala go to Kashmir, they meet with beautiful Rajkumari (Saira Banu). And after being stranded with her for a few nights during a snowstorm, he realizes what he has been missing, and becomes a care-free man in love. This change is welcomed by Mala, but not by their mother. To make matters worse, Rajkumari does not belong to a princely family, and Shekhar knows that his mother will never approve of his marrying her.

A chance meeting between an Assistant Scientist, Shekar, and an established stage dancer and singer, Anjana, results in love. While Shekar has a mother who lives separately, Anjana has been orphaned at an early age. Shekar's mom approves of Anjana, and both get married. Anjana stops her involvement in dancing and singing, and both spent the next several months on relative harmony. Then Anjana finds that Shekar is spending more and more time in the laboratory than with her, and she decides to take up dancing and singing, which does not auger well with Shekar. Arguments ensue, and both decide to live separately. When Shekar's mom comes to visit Shekar, both he and Anjana compromise to live together to fool his mother.
