As I Open My Eyes (French: À peine j'ouvre les yeux) is a 2015 French-Tunisian drama film directed by Leyla Bouzid. It was screened in the Contemporary World Cinema section of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival. Baya Medhaffer stars as a teenage rock singer. The film is Bouzid's first feature.

Synopsis

À Tunis, quelques mois avant la révolution, Farah, une fille de 18 ans de la jeunesse tunisienne branchée, croque la vie à pleine dents, boit de l'alcool et fait la fête avec ses amis. Elle chante dans un groupe de musique arabo-rock qui ne renonce pas à diffuser des messages politiques dans ses morceaux et où Bohrène, son amoureux, joue du oud. Hayet, la mère de Farah, qui a elle-même enterré sa jeunesse contestataire, n'adhère pas à ses écarts de conduite, s'inquiète pour elle et préfèrerait voir sa fille, très bonne élève de lycée, embrasser une carrière de médecin. La musique du groupe enthousiasme et fait danser les plus jeunes dans les bars, mais déplaît aux hommes les plus conservateurs et aux services de surveillance des citoyens.

Dans une banlieue de Strasbourg, on suit le chemin d'un petit garçon, Max, qui lors de ses vacances d'été fera une merveilleuse rencontre avec la musique et l'amour. En effet, il suit le rythme énergique de Swing, une jeune Manouche aux allures de garçon manqué, qui lui fait découvrir sa communauté (leur mode de vie, leurs traditions, leurs origines, leur liberté...). Fasciné par les musiciens manouches, Max prend des cours de guitare avec l'un d'eux, Miraldo (inspiré et interprété par un des plus grands guitaristes de jazz manouche, Tchavolo Schmitt), qui est un génie de la musique. Entre de nombreux, forts et entraînants moments musicaux (chants, danse, musique...), le jeune garçon tombe peu à peu amoureux de son amie Swing. Mais ses vacances se terminent et sa condition de jeune écolier gadjo (terme rom désignant ceux qui ne sont pas de cette ethnie comme dans Gadjo Dilo) le rattrape.

Meng Hu (Don Wong) and Capt. Chow Lung (Lo Lieh) are local supercops who are cracking down on crime with a vengeance. That is, until several fighters get the drop on Chow who ends up dead. Meng blames himself and retires from crime fighting to become a pathetic drunk, drowning in shame. He finds work at a brothel for a time, until a patron's abuse of one of the girls causes him to interfere despite his refusal to fight. After being wounded, he stumbles to the doorstep of a martial arts school run by Magistrate Chen (Chui Chung Hei). Hoping to stay away from conflict, Meng finds work there, but trouble finds him anyway. A white-haired master named Chung Tung (Chang Yi) tries to bribe Chen into letting opium smugglers into the city. Chen refuses and has acupuncture needles thrust into him that will kill him unless removed by Chung Tung who hopes to control the magistrate. Pushed to the limit, Meng finally comes up with a plan to help beat Chung Tung and save Chen. Sadly, Chen believes his son and daughter are giving into Chung Tung and he removes the needles himself. With nothing holding them back, Meng and Chen's offspring leap into action to take out this pack of drug pushers.
