Synopsis
Le scénario s'inspire de faits authentiques qui se sont déroulées pendant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale en Italie. Ici, ce sont les aventures d'un groupe de résistants italiens originaires de Gênes et dirigé par le commandant Vento qui sont évoquées. Ceux-ci doivent s'emparer d'une cargaison d'armes destinées à l'occupant allemand. Aidés par un comité d'ouvriers en grève menés par Marco, ceux-ci parviennent à leurs fins, après plusieurs péripéties pleines de tension. Les chasseurs alpins italiens, un moment hésitant, et placés devant un dilemme crucial, choisissent eux aussi d'entrer en résistance.Actors

In 1945, Benito Mussolini goes to Milan to talk with Archbishop Alfredo Ildefonso Schuster in order that he help him to escape from Italy. The Republic of Salò, the last bastion of fascism, is decaying, and the Americans, along with the partisans are about to win over Milan. Mussolini flees, pursued by his lover Claretta Petacci, and manages to get to the northern village of Dongo. There he clashes with the Germans, who order him to disguise himself as an officer of Germany rather than be captured by the partisans. Mussolini accepts without objection, always hoping for a revolt of his loyal fascists, but they are in jeopardy. When Mussolini's recognized, the leader of the partisans: Walter Audisio would like to first give him to the Americans, so that Mussolini is regularly processed. But the war crimes of the Duce are too many, and so Audisio finally decides to shoot him in front of the Villa Belmone in the village of Giulino, with his female companion.

Loosely based on actual events during World War II, the film depicts real life German Captain Bernhard Rogge commanding the navy raider Atlantis, which from May 1940 to November 1941 sank 22 Allied merchant ships. The story alternates between scenes at the Admiralty and scenes at sea, particularly showing Captain Rogge's humanity and chivalrous conduct of his military engagements. Rogge was one of the few German flag rank officers who was not arrested by the Allies after the war, due to his conduct as a military officer. After eighteen months of successful raids, Atlantis was sunk on 22 November 1941 by the British cruiser Devonshire.

The film is set in France during the Seven Years' War. As the film begins, Fanfan (Gérard Philipe) is a charming, attractive young man who is trying to escape a shotgun marriage. At this vulnerable point in his life, he is approached by the daughter of a recruiting officer, Adeline (played by Gina Lollobrigida), who tells him that if he joins the army, he will find fame, fortune, and will marry the king's daughter. Accordingly he joins the army, only to discover that she made the whole thing up in order for her father to get a recruiting bonus. Nevertheless, encouraged by a series of improbable circumstances, he accepts her prediction as his destiny. A series of events ensues which shows off to great advantage his athleticism and leadership ability. As the film progresses, we become aware of a developing attraction between himself and Adeline which however conflicts with his perceived “destiny” of marrying a king's daughter.

23 mars 1944, via Rosella à Rome. Trois pelotons de la police militaire allemande fond leur ronde en ville lorsqu'un résistant, déguisé en balayeur de rues, fait sauter un camion.
