Renukadevi is widowed and the mother of a son named Ram. Her husband had indulged in all possible vices, and died. Her father-in-law, Rai, does not want Ram to repeat his father's mistakes, and teaches him all the positive values of the Hindu religion, in particular the contents of the Holy Book "Geeta". As a result, Ram refrains from all known vices, is an expert in yogic exercises, decides to live the life of a celibate, and refuses to marry anyone. When Rai dies, Renuka asks Ram to fulfill his grandfather's last wishes, one of which was to get married. She even arranges his introduction to Aarti, an attractive young woman. But Ram is convinced that marriage is not for him. Renuka is overjoyed when her estranged brother, Gopinath, and his son, Rakesh, return from abroad. With their help she hopes to get Ram marries with Aarti. Then things get complicated when Rakesh falls in love with Aarti. Ram leaves town to attend to business, and circumstances propel Renuka to will her entire estate to Rakesh and change his name to Bharat, with the blessings of a renowned saint named Ishwar Baba. Bewafai is a romantic film revolving mostly around a woman named Asha (Tina Munim) who has been in love with a man named Ashok Nath (Rajesh Khanna) since her childhood. But somehow she was never able to convey her feelings for him throughout her childhood and college days. Now Ashok works as her dad's employee. She becomes very possessive about him to the point where she cannot stand the thought of another woman trying to woo him. Sharda is in love with a young man who wants to marry her. Before the marriage could take place, some of his friends force themselves upon Sharda, leaving her pregnant. When her boyfriend does not show up, she decides to keep the child, names her Swati, re-locates to a small town in Southern India and finds employment as a nurse with Dr. Rajendra. Years later Swati has grown up to be an assertive young woman, who is not only outspoken but quite capable of physically defending herself, but her attitude alienates her and Sharda from the community in general. She befriends Ram Mohan, an activist, who is often in trouble with the police. With no one to look after her mother after she gets married, Swati asks Rajendra, now a widower, to marry Sharda, to which he agrees. The marriage takes place, and both move in to live a wealthy lifestyle with Rajendra and his daughter, Anandi. Kishan (Rajesh Khanna) is the spoilt son of a rich businessman. He is a medical student, for whom the life is all about playing pranks and troubling people around. Finally he is taught a lesson in humility by fellow student, Madhu (Hema Malini). He undergoes a dramatic change in outlook and falls in love with her. But his joy is short-lived as Kapilkumar (Danny Denzongpa) kills Madhu as she is the only witness to a murder. On the deathbead, Kishan promises Madhu that he would kill whoever is responsible for the death. Kishan is devastated and carries on a man hunt for KapilKumar. Colonel Sahab is a doctor in a psychiatry ward and Nurse Radha (Waheeda Rahman) is heart-broken after a civilian patient, Dev Kumar (Dharmendra), whom she cared for, pouring out her love and affection, leaves the hospital, as she had been unable to keep her heart separate from her professional work and had fallen in love with her patient. Next Arun Choudury (Rajesh Khanna), a writer and poet enters as a patient, suffering acute mania after being rejected by his lover, Sulekha. After refusing to take his care, Radha relents and starts nursing him.
