It tells the story of an ambitious female journalist who has sacrificed her emotional life for the sake of her career. The story is told through flashbacks during a police interrogation. The film is based on the novel The Cautious Maiden by Cécil Saint-Laurent. Filming took place from 7 March to 7 May 1955.
The film was shown in competition at the 16th Venice International Film Festival and won the award for Most Promising New Director. It was released in France on 21 October 1955.
Synopsis
Le parcours de l’ambitieuse jeune journaliste Catherine Racan qui ne va pas hésiter à sacrifier sa vie sentimentale au profit de sa carrière. Entretenant des relations intéressées pour réussir, elle sera finalement compromise dans une affaire de mœurs.Actors

In Saigon in 1952, as Vietnamese insurgents are delivering major strikes against the French colonial rulers, an innocent and enigmatic young American economist (Audie Murphy), who is working for an international aid organization, gets caught between the Communists and the colonialists as he tries to win the "hearts and minds" of the Vietnamese people. By promising marriage, he steals away a young Vietnamese woman (Giorgia Moll) from an embittered and cynical English newspaperman (Michael Redgrave), who retaliates by spreading the word that the American is actually covertly selling arms to the anti-Communists.

John Cassellis is a television news cameraman. In one of the opening scenes, a group of cameramen and journalists are discussing the ethical responsibilities within their profession: When should filming a gruesome scene end and human responsibility to try to save a life begin? As viewers we are presented with issues such as violence as spectacle, political and social discontent, extreme racism, and class divisions. The film is constantly juggling documentary footage with feature film image. Among his sources, Wexler uses footage from military training camps in Illinois for military troops preparing for planned demonstrations by students and anti-war activists during the Democratic National Convention later that summer.
