This film is a part of the Barbie "Fairytopia" series, but is not a canon sequel to the previous films.
This is the first film in the series which Kelly Sheridan did not voice the protagonist being played by Barbie. The film tells the story of Mariposa, a shy butterfly fairy, who went on a dangerous adventure to save their queen and their land of Flutterfield. "Mariposa" is the Spanish word for "butterfly", and it is also the street name of Mattel's creative design center. The film has a sequel titled Barbie: Mariposa & the Fairy Princess.
Synopsis
Bibble is worried that he will embarrass himself and won't belong with his friend's friends, so Elina tells him the story of Mariposa, a butterfly fairy who lives in a far-off palace called Flutterfield, an island kingdom in Fairytopia populated by fairies with butterfly wings. Henna, the jealous butterfly fairy and the attendant of the queen of Flutterfield, has poisoned the queen in an attempt to take over the kingdom. Due to this, the lights are in danger of going out if she succumbs to the poison. These lights protect Flutterfield from the "Skeezites", monsters who eat butterfly fairies and are repellant to light. It is up to Mariposa and her employers/friends, sisters Rayna and Rayla, to find an antidote to save the queen.Actors

Elina, a wingless flower fairy, and her puffball friend Bibble watch their fairy friend Dandelion fly with three pixies. The pixies make fun of Elina for having no wings, but Elina ignores their teasing. Dandelion, however, defends Elina by fluttering her wings so hard that the small pixies are blown away. They later come back to warn Dandelion and Elina to go home "where it's safe". This is so they don't get kidnapped by someone named Laverna (who is already rumored to have kidnapped a fairy named Topaz). Elina thinks that Laverna is a myth, but Dandelion is unsure so she goes home to ask her mother. Elina and Bibble go back to Peony, her flower home.

Barbie stars as Genevieve, one of twelve princesses who live in a castle with their widowed father, King Randolph. The princesses have adventurous and free-spirited natures that are viewed as "unladylike" and "non-proper" by other members of the royal society. This leads King Randolph to summon his cousin, Duchess Rowena, to the castle to help raise the princesses. Unbeknownst to King Randolph, Rowena plans to poison him and get rid of his daughters so that she can become queen. In Barbie: Fairytopia, the wingless flower fairy Elina defeated Laverna, the evil sister of the Enchantress, and the Enchantress gave Elina wings as a reward. This film's plot begins shortly afterward with Elina flying through the air, still having trouble believing that she has wings. As the three are flying Dandelion, Elina and Bibble in the air Bibble notice that someone was following them. Bibble tells it to Elina and soon, Elina learns from a young sea-butterfly fairy that her friend Nalu, the merman prince, has been kidnapped by several of Laverna’s Fungi at the Crystal Cove. The banished Laverna is seeking out the Immunity Berry, a berry that causes whoever eats it to be immune to all magic. Since Nalu knows how to find the berry, Laverna had sent her Fungi to force Nalu to lead them to the Immunity Berry.

In Equestria, the newly crowned Princess Twilight Sparkle visits the Crystal Empire with her Ponyville friends for a royal summit with princesses Celestia, Luna, and Cadance. That night, Twilight's crown and Element of Magic is stolen by the unicorn Sunset Shimmer, a former student of Celestia. After a chase through the castle, Sunset drops the crown through a magic mirror and follows after it. The princesses inform the ponies that the mirror leads to a different world, and they task Twilight with retrieving her crown on the other side before the portal closes again for thirty moons, or else the Elements of Harmony borne by her friends will no longer protect Equestria. Despite Celestia's insistence that Twilight must travel alone, Twilight's dragon assistant Spike anxiously jumps in after her as she enters the mirror.

In the human world, the students of Canterlot High School are preparing for an upcoming musical showcase, where Twilight Sparkle's human friends are to perform in their own band called the Rainbooms. They find that they assume half-pony forms whenever they play, which is caused by the Equestrian magic brought by Twilight's crown. Meanwhile, former school bully Sunset Shimmer is ostracized by the rest of the students despite her efforts to redeem herself, though Twilight's friends still value their newfound friendship with Sunset. Sunset volunteers to show three new students—Adagio Dazzle, Aria Blaze, and Sonata Dusk—around the school. The trio, who form a band called the Dazzlings, perform a magical song that drives the students to aggression and competition, and they convince the school to make the showcase a Battle of the Bands. Sunset and her friends are unaffected by the Dazzlings' spell, and they contact Equestria for help through a magical book given to Sunset by Princess Celestia.
