Manish (Deepak Kumar) lives with his brother Anand (Ashok Kumar) an advocate, and sister-in-law Tilottama (Nirupa Roy), in Kashmir. Manish has just returned from abroad having completed his medical degree. Neena (Vimi) has come to Kashmir for her holidays and meets Manish and they fall in love. Manish is waiting to get a job confirmation from one of the hospitals in Bombay. Neena’s sister Sharda (Leela Naidu) lives with her husband Chandrashekhar (Rehman) in Bombay. The two are very uch in love with each other. Being childless Sharda is harassed by her mother-in-law Mrs. Verma (Lalita Pawar). Sharda asks Shekhar to get married again but he refuses. Mrs. Verma's harassment of Sharda turns to tragedy when two relatives Darwazalal (Jeevan) and Shanta (Shashikala) come to live with them. Nina is also staying in the house with her sister. Darwazalal poison's Sharda who while dying makes Nina promise that she will marry Shekhar. After Sharda dies Nina and a distraught Shekhar get married. Shekhar has no interest in Nina as he is still grieving the loss of his beloved wife Sharda.

The film is set in Lucknow, where widower, Nawab Mirza Sultan lives with daughter Zeenat Jahan in an old mansion. She falls in love with Nawab Yusuf (Pradeep Kumar), but in a twist of fate, her uncle connivingly fixes her marriage with Nawab Sikandar Mirza (Ashok Kumar), though she assumes it is with Yusuf. Seema is the only child of widowed Mohan, who is adopted by Mohan's boss, Sardar Ranjit Singh, who has no heir to his estate, as his daughter, Jamuna, eloped with a poor peasant, Gopal. Ranjit does not get along with his step-brother, Shankar. Jamuna manages to placate her dad, & he goes to her house, only to find it in flames with Gopal burned to death, and their son, Sunder, missing. Years later, Seema has now grown up and meets with a young man named Pyarelal in Ooty. She meets him a year later, but this time he introduces himself as Jhatpat Singh, a man she was supposedly engaged to in their childhood. Shortly thereafter she meets with the real Jhatpat Singh, and changes her mind about the fake Jhatpat Singh alias Pyarelal. Now Sunil knows that he was adopted and understands that he was the lost son of Gopal. He goes to Sardar Ranjit Singh and appoints to be an estate manager. There he meets Seema again and they rekindle their romance. By that time, planning to steal away property, Shankar sends his son as the lost son of Jamuna and Gopal. Ranjit Singh believes him and wants to marry seema to Shankar's son. After some misunderstandings, family finally reunites and Jamuna's sanity returns. Movie ends with the marriage of Seema and Sunil/Sunder.

Harish Khanna (Ashok Kumar) lives in a happy household consisting of his wife Maya (Nirupa Roy) and his large family of seven daughters and one son. Also staying with them is his widowed sister (Lalita Pawar), and her son Jaggu (Mehmood). Harish spends four days of the week away from his family for work. Harish and Maya soon have a ninth child much to Maya's consternation, as her older daughter, Kamla (Bharati Malvankar) who is married to Gopal is also expecting a child. The fact that Kamla is pregnant is a cause of anxiety, as according to Gopal's parents, the couple have not been together since the wedding and her pregnancy is considered as a sign of her disreputable character. Gopal is not there to give an explanation and his parents decide to send Harish's older daughter back home. Harish finds out that two of his daughters, Kiran (Rajshree) and Kamini (Indrani Mukherjee) are in love with Mohan (Manoj Kumar), the son of the College principal, and Ravindra (Soodesh Kumar) respectively, and that Jaggu is in love with Rekha (Shobha Khote). Harish decides to get the three pairs married.
